O2 UK Launch Cheaper Mobile Social Tariff for People on State Benefits

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today launched a new 4G and 5G mobile plan to support UK people on low incomes, which is a low-cost data (mobile broadband), calls and texts (SMS) plan that is only available to those on eligible state benefits and costs just £10 per month.

Mobile operator Three UK has today published their latest results to 30th June 2024, which among other things reveals that 4,900 sites (up from 4,700 six months ago) across 656 towns and cities are now live with 5G (62% population coverage) and the average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer increased to 30.5GB (up from 30GB).

Mobile Operator Lyca Mobile UK Handed Winding Up Petition by HMRC UPDATE

Troubled mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which is a virtual network operator (MVNO) on EE’s platform in the UK, appears to have suffered a blow this week after the tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), filed a winding-up petition in the courts against their UK business on Monday. But Lyca says it was “issued in error“.

Juniper Research Rank iD Mobile as Top UK Operator for Roaming

Telecoms analyst firm Juniper Research has used an April 2024 survey of 3,300 UK mobile subscribers to identify that iD Mobile ranks top as the “leading network operator in the UK for subscriber roaming satisfaction in 2024“, which saw them achieve a net promoter score of 77%.

HS2 Claims HS2 Could Boost UK Mobile and Rural Broadband

New analysis published by High Speed 2 Ltd, which is a non-departmental public body that is wholly funded by the UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT), has claimed that the HS2 rail project could help “thousands of properties” across 538 postcodes to gain access to “ultrafast broadband speeds” and better mobile connectivity.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has published some of the responses they’ve received from fixed broadband ISPs and mobile operators to their consultation on enhancing network resilience in order to “reduce the risk of network outages“ (here). Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published their H1 2024 study of UK mobile networks (calls, texts etc.) and mobile broadband performance, which once again sees EE (BT) come top against rivals at Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media). EE also “edged past” Three UK to deliver the “best 5G experience“.

A new Strand Partners survey of 4,000 members of the UK public, which was commissioned by broadband and mobile providers Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), has claimed that over a third of rural residents (or 66% of “young people“) are likely to be considering a move away to a town or city in the next 12 months. Poor internet connectivity is one of the key drivers for this.

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q1 FY25 financial results, which reveals that their fixed broadband base grew again to total 1.427 million customers (up by 44k in Q1 vs 52k in the Q4 FY24) and their mobile base fell a bit to total 18.567 million (down by -71k in Q1 vs +66k in Q4 FY24).

BT Group Extend FTTP Broadband Cover to 15 Million UK Premises

Telecoms giant BT Group have today posted a brief trading update to the end of June 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises (unchanged on the previous quarter) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network – delivering total coverage to 15 million. Take-up also held at a steady 34%.

Study Finds No Mobile Operator in Powys Surpasses 50% for Good Coverage

Mobile UK network analyst firm Streetwave has published the first results from their work with the Growing Mid Wales (GMW) programme, which uses bin lorries to map local network (4G, 5G etc.) coverage and broadband performance. Overall, none of the mobile operators provided “Good Coverage” across more than 50% of Powys’ road network, but EE does come top (49%).

Devon and Somerset UK Re-opens 4G Mobile Boost Scheme

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England has re-opened their Mobile Boost Voucher Scheme (MBVS) after receiving £430,000 of fresh funding. The scheme works to improve rural 4G mobile (mobile broadband and voice) availability by offering vouchers (up to £1,300) to help deploy indoor signal boosters or repeaters.
