SpaceX has moved a step closer to introducing a global 4G mobile service via Starlink‘s mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which occurred after the company successfully launched its first six satellites with support for their new ‘Direct to Cell’ product this week.

2023 H2 – UK Full Fibre Broadband Cover Reaches 60.5 Percent

The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). BT Miss Deadline to Remove All Huawei Kit from UK Core Network UPDATE

Telecoms giant BT (EE), and possibly several other UK network operators, have reportedly missed the 31st December 2023 deadline to remove Huawei’s equipment from their network cores. This puts them at risk of being fined up to 10% of their revenue or £100,000 per day for every day that they fail to comply.

Ofcom – UK Gigabit Broadband Rises to 78% as 5G Tops 85-93%

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

ITU Decides Upper 6GHz Band is for Mobile Broadband, Sort Of UPDATE

The ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 came to an end last week and one of its key decisions was to announce that the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) can be used for mobile (5G and 6G), but also allows regulators like Ofcom in the UK to exploring a hybrid approach alongside WiFi.

Connect has today published their annual UK Mobile Network Test 2024 study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 38 towns and along over 10,400km of major roads. Overall, EE managed to come top again, while O2 (VMO2) continued their trend of being bottom.

Ofcom Consult on UK Telecoms Resilience and Battery Backup for Mobile Masts

Ofcom has today proposed to update their resilience guidance to provide greater clarity on how UK broadband ISPs, mobile operators and other digital network companies can “reduce the risk of network outages“.
