Ofcom Sets Rules for the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz UK Mobile Spectrum Auction

After a long delay Ofcom has unveiled the rules for their forthcoming auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz (2350-2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410-3600MHz) bands, which will help mobile operators to launch Mobile Broadband (4G) services with “very fast download speeds“. But it’s bad news for BT / EE as a cap will apply.

GSMA Identifies 5G Spectrum Options and Calls for Harmonisation

The GSMA, which represents 800 Mobile Network Operators (MNO) from around the world, has identified a number of spectrum bands for future ultrafast 5G (5th Generation) based Mobile Broadband networks to use and called on governments and regulators to “collaborate on a harmonised approach.”

We don’t yet have a solid standard for the future 5G based Mobile Broadband tech and nor do we know precisely what radio spectrum it will use, but that hasn’t stopped Qualcomm Technologies from launching one of the first ever 5G modems (Snapdragon X50). Speeds of up to 5Gbps are promised.

Ofcom to Open 700MHz Digital TV Band for Mobile Broadband by Q2 2020

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today confirmed that the 700MHz (694-790MHz) radio spectrum band, which is currently used for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services, will be re-purposed for Mobile Broadband (4G / 5G) operators to use by Q2 2020; 18 months earlier than originally planned.

AT&T Labs Propose AirGig Wireless Powerline Broadband Technology

The research and development division of global telecoms giant AT&T has begun to develop a new twist on the old Powerline Communications idea, but instead of sending electrical signals over the national grid’s power cables it would use the cables to “guide” a wireless broadband transmission.
