A new technology has been created by a team of computer scientists at the University of Leicester (UL), which could improve speed and power consumption for users of mobile devices, particularly Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and may help reap the benefits from the next generation of mobile broadband technology, 6G.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun a discussion that could result in a change to how radio spectrum for the next generation of wireless broadband networks is allocated, which in the future may place greater emphasis on spectrum sharing (we’ve already seen a lot of this via private and local 5G networks etc.) and flexible access.

The Government has this morning announced that the UK is to join the Global Coalition on Telecommunications (GCOT) and commit £70m to the Future Telecoms UKRI Technology Missions Fund (TMF) Programme. Both of which are intended to help research and develop the next generation of telecoms, broadband and 6G networks etc.

The NGMN Alliance (Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance), which is an open forum founded by mobile operators from across the world (e.g. BT, Vodafone, Tele2 etc.), has today taken a more “proactive” stance on influencing the development of future 6G mobile broadband tech by pushing for a more “graceful evolution“.

A team of researchers from Edge Hill University’s Engineering Department and Sichuan University’s College of Electronics and Information Engineering – led by Professor Ray Sheriff – have joined forces to “pave the way for ultra-5G and 6G networks by investigating how Versatile Video Coding (VVC)” can be enhanced and optimised.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned several adverts for UK fixed wireless broadband ISP 6G Internet (IX Wireless) after they were found to have caused confusing by “misleadingly implying that a sixth-generation mobile network existed and was able to be used by consumers.” Awkward.

The UK government (DSIT) has today announced that, as part of the new Wireless Infrastructure Strategy (WIS), they have set out an ambition to “blanket the country with the fastest, most reliable wireless coverage available” – with the plan being for “all populated areas to be covered by ‘standalone’ 5G (5G-plus) by 2030“. The update also includes support for satellite broadband in rural areas and more trials of flexi permits.

The Government of South Korea has set somewhat of a marker down for the world this week after announcing that they would aim to bring forward the timetable for launching the first commercial 6G based mobile network, which would see it being introduced from 2028 instead of 2030 (with pre-6G trials staring in 2026).

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has today handed out £28m to three universities (York, Bristol and Surrey) to help them team-up with major telecoms companies, including Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung, to both design and build future 6G based mobile broadband networks.

Network supplier Ericsson has today announced that they’re investing “tens of million pounds” (GBP) in order to establish a new research unit in the United Kingdom, which will be used to help test and develop the next (sixth) generation of 6G mobile and wireless broadband technologies.

The United Kingdom has succeeded in getting itself elected to hold a seat on the influential governing council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which will give it more of a say in future standards (broadband, satellite, mobile technologies etc.) and the allocation of global radio spectrum etc.

A new experimental test of early 6G mobile broadband technology, which was conducted by LG Electronics (LG) at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Germany, has demonstrated a wireless signal working over the TeraHertz (THz) band that could reach a distance of 320 metres (significant, given the spectrum).

A team from the University of Birmingham‘s School of Engineering in England has developed a new beam-steering antenna for future 5G and 6G mobile (mobile broadband) networks, which claims to have achieved “vast improvements in data transmission efficiency” via a range of frequencies that are “inaccessible” to existing technologies.
