Global Coalition on Telecoms and UK Set Out Security Standards for 6G Mobile

The UK Government and the Global Coalition on Telecoms (GCOT), which also includes Australia, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Finland and the USA, have today published a joint statement that appears to set out their expectations for how the next generation of 6G mobile (mobile broadband) technology should adopt stricter standards to improve network security and resilience.

Vodafone Trial 5G and 6G Mobile Tech that Turns Smartphones into Radars

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’ve begun working with Tiami Networks to test a new technology for current 5G and future 6G mobile broadband networks called Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC). This essentially turns modern Smartphones and mobile networks into something akin to a Radar, with many potential applications.

Vodafone Test Pushes 2.5Gbps Mobile 5G Broadband Speeds via 6GHz Band

Mobile operator Vodafone has demonstrated how harnessing 200MHz of radio spectrum in the Upper 6GHz band, using a chipset with the MediaTek M90 Modem within a standard Smartphone, can deliver download speeds of 2.5Gbps over a 5G network using carrier aggregation to combine multiple radio frequencies on a single link. Upload speeds ranged from 50-180Mbps.

Ulster University Uses AI to Develop Faster MIMO Tech for 6G Mobile

Researchers working out of Ulster University in Northern Ireland (UK) have harnessed AI (Artificial Intelligence) in order to develop a new type of Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (ma-MIMO) technology. The team say this could be used to make future 6G (IMT-2030) based mobile broadband networks “faster, smarter, and far more energy-efficient“.

UKRI Gives £13m to 11 UK Projects to Develop Future 6G and Fibre Technologies

The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) agency, which is the national funding agency for investing public money into science and research projects, recently announced that 11 telecoms and networking projects had each secured a slice of £13m to help commercialise their work on advanced connectivity technologies (e.g. 6G [mobile broadband], fibre optics and more).

Mobile operator Vodafone is working with the Photonics and Radiofrequency Research Lab at the University of Málaga (Spain) to develop a new computer chip design, which can help to direct a wireless mobile signal straight to a user’s smartphone using microwave photonics (i.e. optical beamforming to process, steer, and precisely focus mobile traffic).

Spectrum Policy Forum Looks to Future of TV Spectrum for UK Mobile After 2034

A new report from the cross-industry UK Spectrum Policy Forum (UKSPF), which was conducted in collaboration with consultancy firm Coleago, has examined what might become of the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) spectrum bands after 2034 (currently used for digital TV, PMSE and others). For example, if auctioned to mobile operators, the IMT600 band could raise up to £980m.

The UK Government (DSIT, UK Space Agency) has today announced the launch of a new £3.5m “Very Hard to Reach Programme“, which will conduct three projects that seek to use hybrid networks (e.g. a mix of satellite, fixed wireless and 5G/6G mobile technologies) to help improve broadband connectivity in remote rural areas.

Curved Light Beams May Boost 6G and WiFi Wireless Network Speeds

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned another advert for UK fixed wireless broadband ISP 6G Internet (IX Wireless), albeit this time for sending out a “misleading” leaflet promotion that claimed the provider offered “Full Fibre Speed Broadband” (Full Fibre is a term that’s typically only be used by FTTP networks).

The UK Government has announced that public subsidy via both the past c.£2.54bn Superfast Broadband (SFBB) and current £5bn Project Gigabit roll-out schemes has, since August 2012, helped to expand gigabit-speed network coverage to 1,006,800 additional homes and businesses. A number of new satellite “Alpha Trials” have also launched.
