First Pictures of EE’s New WiFi 7 UK Broadband Router Emerge

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE (BT) has today given a first sneak peek of their next generation Qualcomm-powered and Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be – Extremely High Throughput) capable home broadband router, which was first hinted at in 2023 (here) and is set to launch sometime this year (possibly by around mid-2024).

The Wi-Fi Alliance has today official begun certification for the next generation of Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) capable wireless networking devices. The new Wi-Fi 7 standard is expected to “see rapid adoption“, with more than 233 million devices predicted to enter the market in 2024 alone. Just don’t expect to see those dizzy speed claims of 46Gbps in the real-world.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed our leak from May 2023 (here) by announcing that they’ve agreed a new partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, which will see their home customers becoming some of the first in the world to gain access to future Wi-Fi 7 technology in 2024.

Ookla Study Finds UK Home WiFi Speeds Lag Wired Ethernet

A new study from Ookla, which operates the popular broadband connection testing service Speedtest.net, has surprised absolutely nobody today by revealing that home WiFi performance continues to lag behind wired Ethernet (LAN) performance in many advanced markets (e.g. Wi-Fi speeds in the UK were just 29.8% of Ethernet in Q1 2023).

Several credible sources have informed ISPreview that BT, most likely via EE – their soon-to-be “flagship brand for consumers“, have set themselves a target of being the first UK broadband ISP to market with a WiFi 7 (802.11be) capable router (SmartHub 4). The hope is to be ready by early 2024, but June 2024 is also mentioned.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to free up 500MHz of spectrum in the 6GHz frequency band on a licence-exempt basis so that it can be used by the latest WiFi networks (e.g. Wi-Fi 6 / 6E – 802.11ax), which would make such networks faster, more reliable and a bit more secure.
