Internet provider Call Flow Solutions has won an extension to their on-going pilot of a new hybrid fibre optic and wireless broadband network in rural Hampshire (England), which means that around 200 additional premises in the small village of Privett should also benefit from the service.

The Hampshire County Council in England has called on the UK Government to give district councils “clear legal powers” so they can insist, as part of the planning process, that superfast broadband speeds (24Mbps+) are made available to both new build homes and even retrofitted into existing developments.

ISP Quickline has confirmed that they’ve begun the final deployment phase of their £2,054,000 Government funded superfast wireless broadband pilot in rural North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire (East England), which will deliver Internet speeds of up to 50Mbps and could eventually be deployed around the UK.

The national UK telecoms operator BT appears to have lost out after rival pure fibre optic ISP Gigaclear signed a major new £10 million contract to deploy their “ultra fast” 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology to 6,495 homes and businesses in Gloucestershire (England).

The Northumberland County Council and BT have today signed a second contract worth £4.1m to improve local “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) coverage by putting the service within reach of an additional 3,000 homes and businesses by 2017, which will complement the original £18.9m contract.

As Europe’s 2020 Digital Agenda deadline looms, when every home across the EU is supposed to be put within reach of a 30Mbps+ capable “superfast” broadband connection (plus 50% subscribed to a 100Mbps+ service), there’s a growing recognition that the target will not be met. Some hope that Satellite might be the solution, but it’s not so simple.

The Wales Audit Office (WAO) has today posted its report on the progress of the Superfast Cymru project, which is working with BT to make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity available to 96% of Wales by the end of 2016. On the whole progress is described as “reasonable“, but several problems have been identified (e.g. the 100Mbps speed target for 40%).

The Government’s £1.7bn state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK project, which aims to make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds available to 95% of the country by 2017/18 and is largely dominated by BT, has been deemed “effective” by a new independent evaluation. But the report also raises a few concerns.
