The £410 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project has today announced the achievement of their first contract target, which means that 85% of homes and businesses in the country can now access a faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connection.

The Highlands Council has agreed to commence a mapping exercise that aims to identify the remaining “not spots” in superfast broadband cover, which is to be accompanied by a workshop event next month to debate the issue. It’s hoped this will help to establish a clear plan for boosting coverage.

Fixed wireless ISP Quickline has confirmed that they’ve completed the roll-out of their alternative 50Mbps capable superfast wireless broadband network in northern Lincolnshire (East England), which is being funded by £2m of state aid from the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project.

Blink and you’ll miss it. Without any fanfare the Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, appears to have officially confirmed that 90% of the United Kingdom can now access a “superfast broadband” service, thanks partly to Phase 1 of their Broadband Delivery UK programme with BT.

The UK Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey MP, has taken a break from praising the progress of BTOpenreach’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) roll-out in order to criticise them for their “absolutely woeful” customer service. At the same time he also called for ISPs to stop advertising line rental with a separate price and called for clearer broadband speeds.

The Connecting Cambridgeshire scheme in England, which is currently working with BT (Openreach) in order to make FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to 95% of the county by 2017, has said that another 7,500+ premises could benefit from a future contract extension.

At least part of the on-going effort to roll-out superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services in the Cotswolds, which is a rural area that predominantly straddles both Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, has been halted after Gloucestershire Council suspended £500,000 of its joint funding.

Rural ISP Wessex Internet (M12 Solutions) has confirmed that their hybrid superfast fibre optic and wireless broadband network, which operates in North Dorset, South Wiltshire and East Somerset (England), is now an approved supplier for the £60m “2Mbps for all” rural broadband subsidy (USC).

The European Commission has published their 2016 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which sees the United Kingdom’s country ranking for mobile and fixed line broadband connectivity fall from 4th to 6th place; mostly because other countries are improving at a faster pace.

The High Speed Rail Committee has published its final report and called on the Government’s expensive High Speed Two (HS2) project, which aims to build a new rail link between London and the Midlands, to do more to improve broadband connectivity along the route.

Residents of three villages in rural Lancashire (England) – Inglewhite, Whitechapel and Bleasdale – have accused BT and the council of wasting public money after the community built its own B4RN 1000Mbps FTTH broadband network only for BT to suddenly turn up and overbuild it with 40-80Mbps FTTC.

The Government’s Broadband Deliver UK programme has today published its latest quarterly performance report to the end of 2015, which reveals a bit more detail about the project’s progress. Overall 3,625,369 extra premises have now benefited and can order superfast broadband, with £406,918,848 of BDUK funding spent.
