UK ISP Satellite Internet, which uses the SES (ASTRA) Satellite platform to deliver ‘up to’ 25Mbps capable broadband services, have announced that their service has now completed deployment to the Government’s final pilot test location of Broomfield in North Somerset.

The UK telecoms regulator has today launched a new ‘Call for Inputs‘ to help inform the design of the Government’s proposed broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO), which would ensure that everybody could get a minimum Internet speed of 10Mbps (Megabits per second) by 2020.

Ofcom has published the final version of their most recent European Broadband Scorecard, which shows how the United Kingdom compares with Europe’s other major countries in terms of delivering the Government’s ambition for us to have the “fastest broadband of any major European country by 2015“.

A cautious welcome has greeted UKB Networks submission for planning permission to build six or seven new 15 metre masts in the urban part of North Swindon after an earlier proposal was rejected (here). But the new locations could mean that fewer premises will receive the broadband service.

The Government has today re-announced published their ‘New National Infrastructure Delivery Plan‘, which highlights a commitment to invest over £100bn into UK infrastructure by 2020-21 (transport, housing, digital comms, energy etc.). But there’s not much new for broadband Internet connectivity.

The latest Akamai State of the Internet Q4 2015 report has revealed that the UK’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 13.9Mbps (up from 13Mbps in Q3 2015), which compares with a global average of 5.6Mbps (up from 5.1Mbps in Q3). But despite this improvement the UK’s country ranking has dropped from 14th to 17th.

The CEO of ISP EuropaSat, Andrew Walwyn, has warned that the Government’s rural broadband subsidy scheme for meeting the 2Mbps Universal Service Commitment (USC) is suffering from low uptake because its “very complicated” and the subsidy (up to around £350) is too small.
