The annual Templeton Bonfire and Fireworks Night in Devon had somewhat of a different theme this year after the rural community, which has long struggled with slow sub-1Mbps broadband speeds, decided to burn an effigy of Openreach’s (BT) van.

3rd November, 2017 (3 Comments)

Openreach (BT) has started a new Proof of Concept (PoC) to test the application of “low level error correction” on new Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband lines, which they hope could result in fewer customers raising fault reports.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

After conducting an industry consultation Openreach (BT) has today claimed that ISPs offered “broad support” for their proposal to conduct a “large scale” rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband across the UK, which could in theory reach 10 million premises by 2025. But no deal.. yet.

Recent talks held between Openreach and ISPs appear to have today resulted in the decision to introduce new wholesale pricing and 12 month contracts for their FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) ultrafast broadband products, which can be installed in areas where FTTP isn’t currently available.

Openreach’s (BT) Chairman, Mike McTighe, has told the Broadband World Forum that “we are getting to the point where the copper will run out of steam” and there’s a need to focus on “full fibre” (FTTP/H), but he warned that this could only be done with ISP support and “increases in wholesale pricing.”

Last month we revealed that Openreach were preparing to test a ‘Proof of Concept’ upgrade that could boost the performance of ECI based FTTC (VDSL2) “fibre broadband” lines by adopting a default target downstream noise margin of 3dB (here). However the plan for this test has now been paused.

Israel-based Sckipio, which helped to build some of the kit that Openreach (BT) piloted as part of their 330Mbps G.fast broadband rollout, has today demonstrated over 3.1Gbps of download speed (900Mbps upload) on production silicon using G.fast bonding at 212MHz.

TalkTalk has unofficially revealed the prices for their new unlimited 150Mbps and 300Mbps ultrafast broadband products for those covered by Openreach’s (BT) new G.fast service, which is currently in the pilot phase (here) but should reach 1 million premises by the end of 2017 and 10 million by 2020.

The Chief Network Architect for SSE Enterprise Telecoms, Conrad Mallon, has claimed that Openreach’s new OSA Filter Connect (virtual dark fibre) product is an “inadequate alternative” to Ofcom’s push for the Dark Fibre Access (DFA) solution that was cancelled following BT’s legal challenge.

23rd October, 2017 (6 Comments)

The £428m Digital Scotland (DSSB) project with BT (Openreach) has said they’re on-course to extend fixed line “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) coverage to 95% of Scottish homes and businesses by the end of 2017. So far they’ve reached a total of 800,000 additional premises since the scheme began.

Several ISPs, including Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Hyperoptic and Gigaclear, are reported to be considering a possible legal challenge if the Government chooses to adopt BT’s voluntary proposal to deliver a 10Mbps minimum broadband speed across the UK by 2020.

Ofcom’s proposal to force Openreach (BT) into significantly cutting the wholesale price of their ‘up to’ 40Mbps (10Mbps upload) FTTC “fibre broadband” product for ISPs has been dealt a blow after the Government warned it would “disincentivise investment” in new “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks.

19th October, 2017 (8 Comments)

Openreach (BT) has announced that they are to conduct a second Proof of Concept (PoC) trial of “Spectrum Refarming” technology, which in theory could result in a boost to broadband speeds by allowing different technologies (e.g. FTTC / VDSL2 and G.fast) to share the same spectrum frequency.

18th October, 2017 (0 Comments)

Openreach has today advised us about the forthcoming launch of their new Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product for ISPs (OSA Filter Connect), which appears to be a Dark Fibre style solution that has been designed to address many of the perceived failings of a “one-size fits all” regulated product.

The Chief Executive of the UK telecoms regulator, Sharon White, has told a cross-party committee of MPs that a “key test” of Ofcom’s new regulatory approach to BT will be whether or not Openreach can “do a co-investment deal with another operator” following their “full fibre” broadband consultation.
