Vodafone UK Moots Building its Own Fibre Optic Broadband Network

Newspaper reports claim that telecoms giant Vodafone, which only recently launched a range of its own fixed line broadband services using Openreach’s (BT) national ADSL2+ and FTTC network, could be planning to build their own fibre optic network in the United Kingdom to rival BT and Virgin Media.

Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs of their intention to stop deploying Broadband Enabling Technology (BET) to additional exchanges. The service could be used to extend the reach of a 1-2Mbps DSL line up to around 10km from a local telephone exchange, provided you had very deep pockets.

BT has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q2 2016), which saw their total base of retail broadband customers top 9,117,000 (up by +76K in Q2 vs 1.045m in Q1) and 4,257,000 of those make use of their FTTC/P based Infinity superfast broadband service (up by +181K vs +214k in Q1).

North Yorkshire UK Sets Out Revised Superfast Broadband Plan

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which is working with Openreach (BT) to make superfast broadband (30Mbps+) services available to around 91% of local premises by June 2017, has put forward a revised Phase 3 roll-out plan that could extend local coverage to nearly 96% by mid-2019.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has rejected a string of complaints against a TV advert for BT’s broadband services and a moan by the Broadband for Rural Devon & Somerset (B4RDS) project, which questioned Openreach’s £10.5bn capital investment claims for their national network.

The Local Government Association, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, has called on the Government to set out a “timetable for action” on its plans to introduce a 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation for broadband in order to avoid masses of homes being left in a “digital twilight zone.”

But the regulator has yet to reach a solid agreement with BT and a split is still on the table.

Merseyside UK Closes in on 98% Fibre Broadband Coverage Goal

2,000 Extra Premises in South Gloucestershire to Get Superfast Broadband

The South Gloucestershire Council in England has confirmed that an extra investment of £1.49m is being made into their Phase 2 Superfast Extension Programme, which will work with BT (Openreach) to expand FTTC/P based superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 95-97% of the region by Dec 2017.
