Openreach (BT) has moved into the trial phase for a change that, when adopted by UK broadband ISPs, could potentially help reduce the number of missed engineering appointments by improving the level of contact made between the network operator and end-users (consumers etc.) on certain provision and repair journeys.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has this week confirmed that their new CityFibre and Openreach based ‘Future Fibre‘ packages, which offer average top speeds of up to 506Mbps via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, have now become available to homes in both Bournemouth (Dorset) and Doncaster (South Yorkshire).

UK ISP BT has today refreshed some of the discounts on their FTTC, G.fast and “full fibre” FTTP based home broadband and phone packages, which aside from reducing the monthly fee has also removed the setup fee on many of their bundles for new customers.

Openreach (BT) has published the first Draft Reference Offer for their second stab at an Ofcom regulated Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product, which gives rival UK network operators and broadband ISPs physical access to harness existing fibre optic cables to run leased line style services. But the new solution is more restrictive.

The CEO of Vodafone, Nick Read, has reportedly said they are considering becoming an investment partner for BT Group’s £15bn rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology (here), which is currently aiming – via Openreach – to cover 25 million UK premises by December 2026.

A new survey of 400 UK-based SME businesses, which was conducted by ISP Spitfire during March 2021, has found that nearly half (46%) of firms have no idea that their existing analogue phone and ISDN services will be switched-off completely by December 2025.

The Scottish Government appears to be in the process of enhancing their mapping technology for the £579m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which could boost “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage in rural areas by making it easier for ISPs to identify homes that aren’t connected to such a service and are thus eligible for vouchers.

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

The threat of a major national UK strike by a significant chunk of BT’s workforce appears to have subsided, if perhaps only temporarily, after the two sides involved took steps to calm the situation and re-engage in negotiations. But the thaw in hostilities may only last until early June, unless an agreement can be reached.

Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that a further 27 UK locations have been added to their £12bn Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout plan, which is working to make their gigabit-capable network available to 20 million premises by the mid-to-late 2020s (currently building at a rate of c.42,000 premises per week).

Openreach has begun using What3words to help find damage to broadband ISP cabinets, telephone poles and overhead wires across the UK. In case readers don’t know, W3W is a geocode system that essentially reduces any location with a resolution of about 3 metres down to being described via three dictionary words.

Openreach (BT) has today published the next batch of 77 UK exchange locations where they plan to move away from old copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur in areas where over 75% of premises can get their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

Openreach has started to deploy a new 25 tonne “Clean Fast” machine in the United Kingdom, which is a significantly faster, cleaner and quieter way of digging their new optical fibre cables into the ground. The kit is currently being tested around the rural Hope Valley (near Derwent Dam) in Derbyshire.

Openreach (BT) has today taken the next step towards upgrading from analogue to digital services via the issuing of a “stop sell” notification in the trial area of Mildenhall (Suffolk), which means that new customers will now only be able to take all-IP (digital / VoIP) based phone and broadband services (no more analogue phones etc.).

UK ISP BT has issued their second biannual report into the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation for broadband, which reveals they’re building USO connections that cover nearly 5,000 homes and have introduced a new cost sharing system to help communities afford an upgrade.

Telecoms giant BT, which is currently doing everything it can to fund Openreach’s planned £12bn rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband services to 20 million UK premises by the mid to late 2020s, has reportedly appointed investment bank Lazard and held tentative early talks with a view to selling their BTSport broadcasting biz.
