Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today launched a new national “Call Waiting List” campaign, which aims to raise awareness among UK businesses of their plans to withdraw old copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services by December 2025 and replace them with digital (IP / VoIP) alternatives.

The Centre for Economics & Business Research and Ofcom have today released separate, albeit complementary, reports that take a post-COVID19 look at the UK’s digital divide. The CEBR in particular estimates that 1 million people could return to the workforce with FTTP broadband available across the UK (up from the previous estimate of 500k).

After an excruciatingly long wait, budget conscious UK ISP Plusnet finally looks set to move into the ultrafast broadband era by launching their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages later this year. The product also seems likely to be accompanied by a new router (possibly a re-brand of BT’s Smart Hub 2).

Cuckoo, which only launched last summer and is thus still a relatively new broadband ISP in the UK, has just completed a fresh funding round – led by RTP Global with participation from JamJar Investments – that saw them raise £4.3 million in order to help fuel their future growth.

A new Opinium survey of 2,001 UK adults, which was conducted in mid-March 2021 and commissioned by Uswitch, has revealed that 26% of people with a landline don’t even have a phone attached to it and 35% of respondents said they only have a landline because it’s needed for their broadband connection.

Residents on a relatively new build homes development in the rural Shropshire (England) market town of Shifnal have been left confused after Openreach, which had been deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the area, suddenly abandoned the build due to a “system error” and cost issues.

Earlier this year we reported on an increasingly common example of how network capacity problems on Openreach’s UK telegraph poles can prevent people from ordering a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service via their ISP (here). Today we share a little more detail on the operator’s plan for tackling this.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed a small but important change to their wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband product, which reduces the product’s minimum contract term from 12 months to just 1. But whether or not UK ISPs choose to pass this on to consumers is another matter entirely.

Residents of the Parklands Development in Reading (Berkshire), which was built a few years ago by CALA and had a battle just to get FTTC from Openreach (BT) installed, are celebrating after managing to convince Hyperoptic to deploy their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband network to all 300+ homes on the site.

Broadband ISP Wildanet has announced the official start of their £50m programme to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across Cornwall in England, which will start with the provider’s home town of Liskeard before moving into the surrounding rural areas within the PL14 postcode.

Openreach (BT) has signed a strategic collaboration with network integrator firm STL, which will see the company provide optical cable solutions to help support the UK operator’s ongoing deployment of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks to 20 million UK premises by 2025-30.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they will invest a further £100m+ (capital expenditure) over the next 12-months into Northern Ireland. The funding will help to expand the availability of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to another 100,000 premises, as well as to maintain their existing network.

Openreach (BT) has reportedly restarted talks with a number of big UK broadband ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk, Vodafone) over the development of discounted long-term wholesale agreements for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service, which were paused last year after rivals like Virgin Media raised competition concerns.

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has this afternoon praised broadband ISPs for helping to create more than 22,000 new jobs over the past year as “forecasts for gigabit rollout are revised further upwards,” which is an interesting statement coming so soon after the Government’s decision to downgrade their own coverage target.

As expected (or feared) Openreach (BT) has today announced a series of wholesale price increases for UK ISPs that use certain legacy copper line broadband, FTTC (VDSL2, G.fast, SOGEA) and phone products, which are intended to help the operator to afford their £12bn roll-out of 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just posted a summary of the internet download and upload (data) traffic that has passed across their national UK broadband infrastructure between December 2019 and March 2021, which helps to highlight just how much data we’re all gobbling vs before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Openreach (BT) has this week launched a new “Advanced Provision Trial” for their UK gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP products, which so far as we can tell appears to be the next step on the operator’s path toward development of a new FTTP for business product.
