Leicestershire UK Get Extra Broadband Cash as Contract Retendered

The Superfast Leicestershire project in England has secured a small pot of £100,000 in extra funding to help the scheme spread “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) further, although the details remain unclear. Meanwhile the East Leicestershire contract for Phase 3 has been re-tendered “as no credible bids were received.”

ISP Aquiss UK Reduces Ultrafast FTTP Home Broadband Price

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has reduced the standard monthly price of their 150Mbps (26Mbps upload) “Pure Fibre” package from £56 to £48 per month on a 12 month contract term. A special offer is also running that gives you the first three months of service for £40 per month.

8200 Extra Devon and Somerset Premises to Get Fibre Broadband

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has signed two extension contracts with UK ISP Airband and telecoms giant BT (Openreach), which will see a further 8,200 premises gaining access to faster “fibre broadband” (mostly full fibre FTTP) connections by the end of 2021.

Senior broadband and mobile figures from UK telecoms giants BT and Vodafone have today warned cross-party MPs on the Science and Technology Committee that they’d need at least 5-7 years to fully remove Huawei’s kit from their networks, or “blackouts” could be a risk. Fake Engineers Steal Batteries from Openreach Street Cabinets

The Worcester Crown Court (WCC) has this week convicted three men after they dressed up as fake engineers in order to steal vital backup batteries from Openreach’s (BT) street cabinets, which supply broadband and phone connectivity to homes and businesses. The thefts took place across the UK.

2020 H1 – UK Gigabit Broadband Covers 22% as FTTP Hits 14.8%

The latest independent model has estimated that the H1 2020 coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the UK has risen to 14.8% of premises (up from 11% in H2 2019), while 61.7% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 59.3%) and 22.1% are within reach of “gigabit” (1Gbps) speeds.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that 80,000 premises across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland can now access their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network and work is on-going. Ofcom Consults on Openreach UK Copper Retirement Process

The UK telecoms regulator has today opened a short consultation on their proposal to push back some key decisions regarding the retirement process for Openreach’s (BT) copper lines in favour of fibre optic broadband. In short, Ofcom wants to see a bit more FTTP roll-out take place first (for experience), before they set out a final plan.

79,000 Premises in Wales Remain Without Superfast Broadband UPDATE

The Welsh Government (WG) has today issued a short update on their various broadband schemes, which among other things reveals that 79,000 properties (categorised as “white premises”) still do not have access to “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) and won’t benefit from any future roll-out plans within the next 3 years.

The service has been on pause since last year, when the operator re-focused toward gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.
