Avanti, which operates the HYLAS Satellite broadband network, has claimed that a lack of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) in the County of Cornwall (England) is “costing jobs and holding back new start-ups,” with an estimated 6,500 Cornish businesses allegedly still being stuck in the economic slow lane (Council figures).

The UK Government’s Health Secretary, Matt Hancock MP, has said that he believes “every single GP” should have access to a “full fibre” (e.g. FTTP) broadband connection and he wants Openreach (BT) to do the heavy lifting, albeit with the help of their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS).

Trouble seems to be brewing in Maldon after councillors on the District Council’s Finance Committee were said to have voted unanimously to ask the full council to scrap its deal for helping to fund the roll-out of “superfast broadband” with Essex County Council, which would have contributed £45,000 to the effort.

Consumers have a lot of options when buying a new VDSL2 router for their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable (66-63Mbps average) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based broadband ISP connection but strictly speaking you should be using an Openreach (BT) approved model. Thankfully uno has published the most recent list of approved devices.

During a routine check we noticed that UK ISP iDNET appears to have joined the club of providers that are now selling packages based off Openreach’s new hybrid fibre G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) technology, which can offer maximum download speeds of up to 160Mbps or 330Mbps. They’ve also revised their FTTP plans.

BT has today announced that 31,000 of their employees have officially been transferred (TUPE process) to become part of an “independent workforce” under Openreach, which is a key part of Ofcom’s requirement that the network operator become a “legally separate” company (a wholly owned subsidiary of BT plc).
