Cardiff Council has today announced plans to roll-out an “initially” free wireless Internet (wifi) hotspot service across the city centre, which BT will build by installing access points on the areas existing lamp posts and other street furniture.

The CEO of budget Internet provider TalkTalk, Dido Harding, has once again reiterated her belief that BT is “acting anti-competitively” in the market for superfast broadband (FTTC) products and she wants them to cut the related wholesale price that it charges ISPs to around £4 +vat a month.

The UK telecoms regulator has today issued a correction to its original July 2013 proposal (here) that would force BT into reducing the cost of their fixed line wholesale broadband services (WLR, SMPF, MPF) to ISPs. The changes represent only a small price difference of a few pence to a few pounds but then the original proposal wasn’t huge either.

BT Group has today released their latest financial results to 30th June 2013 (Q2), which saw the operators retail ISP division increase their fixed line broadband subscribers by +95,000 in the quarter to total 6,799,000 (down from the +136k added in Q1-2013 and +122k in Q4-2012).

Ofcom has today proposed several new measures that would effectively force BT to cut the cost of their fixed line wholesale broadband services (WLR, SMPF, MPF) to Internet providers (ISP) and redefine which parts of the United Kingdom (UK) should be subject to related regulation or indeed de-regulation.

BT’s strategy to retire their older 20th Century Network (20CN) based broadband ISP services (e.g. 8Mbps ADSL / IPStream Connect products) remains on course to begin its final phase in October 2013, which by 31st March 2014 should see related services being removed from a total of 2549 telephone exchanges around the United Kingdom.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, confirms that the European Commission (EC) “did not raise any concerns” about its plans to slash the price that ISPs, mobile operators and businesses must pay to BT for 1Gbps+ wholesale Leased Line (Ethernet) services in all parts of the UK except Hull and London.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today issued a Draft Statement that formally notifies the European Commission (EC) of their proposal to cut the price that ISPs, mobile operators and businesses pay to BT for wholesale Leased Line services at speeds of above 1Gbps in all parts of the UK except London and Hull.

BT Wholesale’s latest price list update reveals that the operators forthcoming and “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) capable FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) broadband ISP service, which will be available to FTTC capable UK lines from spring 2013, could attract Excess Construction Charges (ECC) of over £3,000.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has refused BT permission to extend the deadline for appealing against Ofcom’s final determination on its wholesale Ethernet charges. The regulator last year fined the telco £94,823,000 after it was found to have overcharged several broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom.
