Telecoms giant BT will today launch their official Black Friday sale, which looks set to offer the first 3 months of service completely free “across all our broadband packages.” On top of that, all of their TV and Sport packages will be half price for the first 3 months, which is in addition to the 3 months free broadband offer.

Openreach (BT) has today officially added another 170 new towns and villages (covering 1.5 million premises) to the UK rollout plan of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which are all the same as those we published last month (here). The news comes as they reach 6 million premises passed.

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which saw TalkTalk come top of the naughty table for gripes about their fixed line home broadband and phone services. Meanwhile, Virgin Media took the most flak for Mobile and Pay TV, although overall complaints were down.

Last year Openreach (BT) began consulting on their plans to close 4,600 exchanges across the United Kingdom as part of their move from copper to fibre optic based broadband ISP lines. The operator has today begun to consult on the first 5 pilot exchanges to go through this new mass-migration process.

UK broadband ISP BT has announced that their “flexible” Pay TV packages – specifically Entertainment, Big Entertainment, and VIP TV – will now include the popular Netflix internet video streaming service for one monthly payment and on one bill. In addition, the aforementioned TV packages will all be half price for 3 months.

Ofcom has today finalised the changes that were first confirmed in July to improve how BT handles delivery of the UK’s Universal Service Obligation (USO), which aims to bring faster broadband ISP speeds to those who can’t yet receive a 10Mbps+ capable download speed and aren’t planned to do so in the near future.

Yesterday’s Plenary meeting of the Welsh Parliament raised an interesting point when it highlighted the Welsh Government’s removal of the superfast broadband availability checker from their Superfast Cymru page, which makes it harder for people to know which areas will benefit from the state aid supported rollout.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that they intend to protect around 5,000 “vital phone boxes” from closure by BT and KCOM, but only those that are truly still needed by local communities. Without such protection, some of those phone boxes considered “vital” would still have been set for removal.

Telecoms giant BT has confirmed that they’re working with the UK university sector and other utilities to develop and trial a new range of robots, which they hope could be used by Openreach and others to help speed up the rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks and fix them when broken.

The BT Group has published their Q2 2021/22 results, which reports that their consumer ISP division now has a total of 945,000 broadband customers on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 860K last quarter), while Openreach has grown their UK FTTP coverage to 5.78m premises (up from 5.16m). Build costs have also fallen.

UK ISP BT and satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK government, have today officially signed a Distribution Partner Agreement that could result in faster low-latency backhaul and broadband solutions for businesses. Further down the line, it may also help to cover rural homes by fuelling Fixed Wireless Access.

Openreach (BT) has today announced both a UK coverage expansion of their niche FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) broadband ISP product and the introduction of a new FoD “near network commercial trial“, which looks as if it could make it significantly cheaper for some areas to order the full fibre product.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today posted a new evaluation of the previous Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), which helped to boost the coverage of “superfast” (24-30Mbps+) ISP networks from c.76% (commercial) to around 97% of premises (i.e. an additional 5.5 million premises) across three phases.

Ofcom has today approved an earlier proposal – requested by both Three UK and EE (BT) – to increase the permitted power output for the equipment that UK mobile operators use in the 800MHz band, which is expected to result in a small coverage improvement for the related 4G data (mobile broadband) and calling services.

Broadband giant BT has reportedly hired advisory firm Robey Warshaw LLP to work alongside Goldman Sachs, which was appointed for a similar reason last year (here), to help boost their defences against a possible takeover attempt by Patrick Drahi’s Altice UK, which in June 2021 (here) acquired a 12.1% equity stake worth c.£2bn.

Openreach (BT) has just published a new update to the UK rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which appears to add around 170 new locations (towns and villages) as part of their £15bn project to cover 25 million premises by December 2026.

Several major UK broadband ISPs, including BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media (VMO2), have been ordered by London’s High Court to block six more streaming websites after they were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).
