Business UK broadband ISP Commsworld has today announced that they’ve secured a 15-year contract, worth £8.5 million, to deliver a new Wide Area Network (WAN) for West Lothian Council in Scotland. The work will upgrade the council’s existing service with a brand-new fibre optic network and provide a 10-fold increase in available bandwidth.

The UK’s largest alternative 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband operator, CityFibre, has today published their latest trading update to the end of 2025 and revealed that their network now covers 4.7 million premises (4.5m RFS). Customer take-up has also grown rapidly to total 848,000 (up by 64% from 518,000 at the same time last year).

Talk about confusing. The founder of internet retail giant Amazon, Jeff Bezos, has announced that he intends to launch a second mega constellation of 6Tbps (Terabits per second) symmetric speed capable broadband satellites, albeit via his Blue Origin rocket company, called TeraWave, which seems to conflict a bit with the existing Amazon Leo project.

Broadband provider VISPA has recently become subject to another “First Gazette notice for compulsory strike-off” (petitioner: HMRC) – as shown on the Companies House (CH) website, which follows both a significant delay to the publication of their latest accounts (CH’s website states their next accounts were “due by 31 January 2025“) and adoption of CH’s default address.

The country’s largest alternative broadband operator, CityFibre, has this morning announced that they’ve “unlocked” their nationwide footprint and made their business Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) services available across 4.5 million premises – offering wholesale business products at data speeds of up to 2.5Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The latest 2026 Sunday Times 100 Tech list has been published, which reflects a ranking of Britain’s fastest-growing private technology companies. The good news is that six broadband network operators have managed to make it into the 2026 hardware list, with Netomnia topping the table in 3rd place and CityFibre just edging in at 48th at the bottom.

Sources have informed ISPreview that broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media (O2) has today notified around 700 staff that their roles are to be transferred to the Indian owned Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tech Mahindra. The move is intended to “better deliver for our customers“, although this could still result in some redundancies.

A major newspaper has claimed that creditors of the indebted Abingdon-based alternative broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has built a full fibre (FTTP) network across 612,000 premises in rural parts of England and is home to c.160,000 customers, are set to take control of the business after an attempt to sell the company failed.

The ITS Technology Group, which have deployed various open access and business-focused full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across parts of the UK, recently published their annual accounts and revealed an expansion of their network length by 13%, as well as a 12% increase in coverage and a 99% rise in take-up (on-net grew 77% and off-net grew 30%).

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has announced that their EE mobile network has secured a major new contract with the UK’s largest airline, easyJet, to deliver thousands of mobile connections to keep its flight crew, aircraft and airports linked up across Europe – in 35 countries and over 150 airports (from Gatwick to Gran Canaria).

Clevedon-based broadband ISP Glide Group has today announced a new multi-year contract extension with the University of Exeter in Devon (England), which will deliver a “major upgrade” to their wired and wireless internet connectivity – focused upon the educational establishment’s student accommodation estate.

Alternative network operator and UK ISP G.Network, which has deployed a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across parts of London, has followed up last week’s report – that they’d been acquired by distressed debt specialist FitzWalter Capital (here) – by officially filing a Notice of Intention (NoI) to appoint an administrator.

One of the UK’s largest alternative full fibre broadband networks, Netomnia (Substantial Group), has confirmed to ISPreview that they plan to merge their two retail internet providers into a single brand. The move means that Brsk’s operations will now become part of YouFibre and adopt the same branding – reflecting the strong performance of the latter brand.

Aviva-backed alternative gigabit broadband operator Truespeed, which has only just merged with County Broadband to create a single full fibre operator covering 177,000 premises (RFS) and 41,000 customers in England (here), is reportedly in talks with Freedom Fibre about the possibility of consolidating into an even larger network.

Telecoms giant VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) has today announced that they’ve extended their existing partnership with high street mobile phone and service retailer Get Connected, which will see them become the exclusive mobile operator (MNO) in 46+ Get Connected stores across Wales and parts of England (Midlands and the South West).

Literacy Capital (BOOK) has announced that it has sold its stake in Managed Internet Service Provider Wifinity, which typically specialises in deploying WiFi style broadband networks to UK businesses and consumers, to European-focused infrastructure fund Arcus Infrastructure Partners. Under the terms, £15m will be received in cash at completion, with a further £400k expected around the end of 2026.
