The not-for-profit London Internet Exchange, which handles a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around 900 members (broadband ISPs, mobile and CDN providers etc.), has revealed that their LON2 network (interconnection platform) is nearing a key milestone of 1Tbps (Terabits per second) of peak network traffic and with a full technology refresh planned for later this year.

Alternative network operator and ISP Grain has today announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has grown to cover 250,000 UK premises (up from 220k in May 2024) and 43,000 customers (up from 30,000). But crucially, they also did as expected (here) and went EBITDA positive during the quarter ended March 2025.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Edinburgh-based UK alternative broadband network operator and ISP GoFibre, Neil Conaghan, has now quietly also been named as the Interim CEO of network provider Wildanet – they’re doing something similar to GoFibre, albeit at the other end of the United Kingdom.

In a somewhat unsurprising development, newspaper reports have today claimed that Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison) may be gearing up to support their merger by discussing the launch of a new Pay TV service. Such products are typically sold as part of a bundle (convergence), such as alongside fixed broadband, phone and mobile plans.

Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Cambridge claim to have demonstrated the UK’s “first long-distance ultra-secure transfer of data over a quantum communications network” using “standard [single-mode] fibre optic infrastructure“. The test successfully transmitted a live quantum-secured video call over a distance of 410km (between Bristol and Cambridge).

Business internet and managed service provider MLL Telecom has announced that they’ve been awarded a place on the latest YPO (The Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation) public sector procurement service. The decision gives them a place on six LOTS for the new framework.

Business focused broadband ISP and IT solutions provider Focus Group has today announced that they’ve acquired Rossendale-based managed IT and telecoms solutions provider Matrix247 for an undisclosed sum. The latter was originally setup by Stephen Pritchard and Geoff Wright in 1991!

Alternative network operator Elevate (formerly Telcom and Luminet) has today announced that they’ve completed the deployment of a new full fibre “Hypercity” network across the city of Cardiff in Wales. The new network gives over 5,000 businesses access to dedicated internet speeds up to 10Gbps and over 4,000 homes access to speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Network infrastructure provider CommScope has today announced that they’ve started a new collaboration with Brighton-based Altnets (the company, not the sector), the telecoms procurement specialist. The aim of this is to “accelerate the UK’s full-fibre rollout, supporting Project Gigabit and the nation’s digital infrastructure“.

Peterborough-based Rydal Group, which is a UK telecoms, broadband and managed IT provider, has today announced that they’ve acquired the IT services arm of Trisoft Limited, a Midlands-based technology provider. The move follows a recent acquisition spree, which most recently saw the group gobble phone and internet provider Merula.

This might not seem like a big number for an operator with an overall base of 10.9 million customers (mostly residential / domestic users), but it reflects rapid growth over the last 4 years “from a virtual standing start“.
