IET Calls on UK ISPs to Restrict Internet Access of Virus Infected Computers

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IEF) has called on broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom to help tackle malware (malicious software and viruses) by, for example, restricting Internet access to infected computers and devices (e.g. PCs, Tablets etc.).

The vice president of online security firm Trend Micro, Rik Ferguson, has warned that “desperate times call for desperate measures” and is calling for broadband ISPs to “quarantine” the computer systems of customers that have been infected with malware (e.g. viruses, Trojans, botnets etc.).

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee, which examines the expenditure, administration and policy of the Government’s related department, has published its latest (6th) Online Safety report and found that website blocking by UK ISPs was “highly unlikely to be a suitable approach” for tackling adult pornography or violent material on the Internet.

The growing crisis on Europe’s border between Ukraine and Russia, which centres on a dispute over ownership of the Crimea territory, took an unusual twist yesterday after it was spotted that Sky Broadband and other UK ISPs appeared to be restricting access to Ukrainian news site Tsn.ua. Oddly Sky claims it was blocked for being on a “white list” of websites (note to Sky: normally you unblock those).

UK members of the hugely popular WordPress.com website, which allows users to setup their own blogs using WP’s Content Management System (CMS), have been reporting a variety of access a usability problems with the service since the beginning of last week. A big finger of blame is now being pointed at TalkTalk’s Internet filtering.

A group of Hollywood movie studios have successfully won a case in London’s High Court that will require all of the country’s major broadband ISPs to block their customers from accessing the following websites – Megashare, Viooz, Watch32 and Zmovie. All were found to be facilitating Internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Virgin Media UK Launch FREE Web Safe Network Level Filtering Service

Virgin Media has today become the last of the big broadband ISPs to launch free Parental Controls (Web Safe), which support the Government demanded network-level filtering technology to help censor “potentially age-inappropriate websites“. Virgin’s site is also being updated to reflect their new headline speeds of up to 152Mbps.

24% of EU Internet Users Suffer ISP Internet Content Restrictions or Blocking

A new survey of 28,000 Internet using citizens across the European Union (3290 from the UK) has revealed that 24% claim to have been prevented by their broadband ISP or mobile operator from watching videos, listening to music or using other applications of their choice, allegedly due to censorship measures or speed restrictions.
