The Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has ordered broadband and telecoms operator Sure (Guernsey) Limited to refund a total of £115,360 to customers of their wholesale leased line services, which occurred after the regulator found they had “overcharged” for the service between 1st January 2021 and 31st July 2022.

The States of Guernsey, which governs the English Channel Island of Guernsey (British Crown dependency), yesterday voted to do something extraordinary by temporarily suspending local competition law in order to allow the dominant telecoms and broadband operator, Sure, to acquire Airtel Vodafone. The reward is a £48m deal to deploy 5G services.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Sure has successfully managed to improve the 4G and 5G signal across the north of Guernsey (English Channel Island) by hiding a new mast in plain sight, which was achieved by deploying the new infrastructure in a marina and making it look like a tall white yacht mast.

The States of Guernsey, which is the government for the English Channel Island of Guernsey, have moved to improve and simplify the handling of consumer broadband, phone and mobile complaints by adjusting their rules to make clear that the States of Guernsey’s Trading Standards Service (TSS) will be the main body for handling such things.

Network operator and ISP Sure, which is present on the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, has informed existing customers of their intention to increase mobile, phone and broadband prices – in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) – by “up to” 6.1% (Isle of Man), 5.8% (Guernsey) and 5.7% (Jersey) from 1st July 2024.

The Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has posted its “final decision” on wholesale broadband charges for the English Channel Island of Guernsey, which has called for prices to be slashed by a significantly greater amount than the 11% reduction first proposed in May 2023.

State-owned ISP JT (Jersey Telecom) has announced that they are planning to invest £80 million in order to roll out a new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network across Jersey (English Channel Island), which is to be deployed using Ericsson’s technology (radio kit etc.).

The Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has ruled that the wholesale charges for broadband services on the English Channel Island, which are paid by ISPs and then passed on to consumers, should be lowered by 11% on average to create a “better deal for end-users while ensuring profits are reasonable.”

The States of Guernsey has confirmed that their joint £37.5m project with incumbent broadband ISP Sure, which aims to build a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the entire English Channel Island of Guernsey (30,000 premises) by the end of 2026, is running ahead of schedule and has now covered 9,000 homes.
