Big Four UK ISPs Commit GBP1m to Help Tackle Online Child Abuse

Following this week’s controversial meeting with the government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, four of the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband) have agreed to collectively commit £1 million over the next 4 years to “crack down” on the creation and distribution of online child abuse content.

The government’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) has today published its report on foreign involvement in the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), which warns that BT’s deployment of broadband ISP and telecoms equipment supplied by Chinese firm Huawei could have “implications for national security“.

The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has confirmed that it now expects broadband ISPs to start issuing their first warning Notification Letters to customers, those whom are suspected of internet piracy, during “the latter half of 2015“. Sky Broadband (BSkyB) appears to have become the first major UK ISP to extend its court ordered censorship of specific websites that facilitate internet piracy (e.g. The Pirate Bay) to include a wide range of proxy servers, which allows users to bypass such blocks without needing to use a VPN or other solution.

EU Court Rules UK Broadcasters Can Block Live TV Internet Streaming Sites

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that UK broadcasters, such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, have the right to block retransmission of free-to-air TV (e.g. Freeview) programming over the Internet unless the related service (e.g. TVCatchup Ltd) gains specific permission. But they haven’t won yet.

Ofcom Claims 16 Percent of UK Internet Users Make Illegal Downloads

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today released a new study into online copyright infringement (internet piracy), which estimates that 16% of UK internet users aged 12+ have consumed at least one item of online content illegally between August-October 2012 and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content“.

The Metropolitan Police have jailed two adult men for stealing a “large quantity” of BT’s copper telephone cable while they posed as local workmen, which resulted in a total loss of fixed line broadband ISP and phone services to hundreds of premises in Teddington and Sussex (England) during May 2012.

The battle to tackle copper cable and metal theft appears to finally be turning. BT informs ISPreview.co.uk that there was a 50% fall in incidents and a 24% reduction in faults pertaining to malicious damage of their UK phone and broadband ISP network last year.

The communications regulator has today revealed that 47% of UK internet users are unable to “confidently identify” whether the online content they download, stream or share is legal or not.
