The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, is this week expected to commit £5bn of public funding in order to support his seemingly now watered down ambition to have “Gigabit broadband sprouting in every home” by the end of 2025 (full fibre, cable broadband, 5G etc.).

UK ISP Virgin Media Business has won the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract for Belfast in Northern Ireland, which will see more than 200 public sector sites being linked up by a new Gigabit-capable data network. The move should also complement Virgin Media’s 1Gbps DOCSIS 3.1 broadband rollout for homes.

Several industry sources have indicated to ISPreview.co.uk that they now expect the Government to water down Boris Johnson’s (Prime Minister) pledge to cover the United Kingdom in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2025, which will instead be replaced by “gigabit” or “gigafast” terminology (i.e. delivery by more than just full fibre).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has begun to invite selected customers in Southampton (Hampshire) to help trial their new DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrade, which will boost the service’s top download speed to 1000Mbps (albeit only 50Mbps upload) on existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) and full fibre FTTP lines.

The CEO of Liberty Global, Mike Fries, has lent more weight to reports that sibling Virgin Media UK might be planning to establish an alternative network ISP in order to reach into the 10 million or so premises that their existing ultrafast cable and FTTP broadband network does not serve (e.g. rural areas, suburbs and smaller towns).

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) added another +7,100 UK customers to their broadband network during the second quarter of 2019 (down from +35K in Q1), which takes their total base to 5,266,700. Over the same period their network has deployed to cover another 130,000 premises (up from +102K last quarter).

The CEO of UK cable and TV operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global), Lutz Schüler, was warned a tiny rival start-up ISP called toob that it “will use everything to keep them out of our city,” which is a reference to how both plan to deploy 1Gbps speed broadband services across the port city of Southampton in Hampshire.

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has pounced on Boris Johnson’s appointment to the role of UK Prime Minister by revealing that it will make broadband download speeds of at least 1Gbps (1000Mbps) available to all 15 million premises on their network by 2021, which is thanks to their long-awaited DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade.

A new report has revealed that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.06% (+21.2 million) during Q1 2019 to total 1.047 billion, while older pure copper line ISP connections continued to decline in the face of a rising onslaught from faster fibre optic based connections.

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has signed telecoms builder Avonline Networks (M Group Services), which will support the rollout of their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based RFoG / DOCSIS network to 70,000 extra premises across the South West of England, Wales and North East England.

Cable broadband and TV operators, such as Virgin Media in the UK, that have adopted or are in the process of adopting the new DOCSIS 3.1 standard could also benefit from a new software update. This could enable them to deliver ultra low latency times of around 1ms (millisecond) or less.

Several credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that cable ISP Virgin Media’s future “Gigabit Cities” rollout, which will mark their first major UK activation of the new DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrade, seems likely to be expanded with 3-5 UK cities now in the frame for launch around 2019/20.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has today announced that they have “plans to connect more homes” to their 516Mbps capable ultrafast broadband and TV network in Scotland, provided the Scottish Government and local authorities are able to support them. Sadly they haven’t said how much further they’d go.

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has posted their latest results for the first quarter of 2019, which saw their UK cable broadband and TV network grow its coverage by another 102,000 premises and their total internet access base add +35,000 new customers to total 5,259,600 (up from the 21.7k added in Q4 2018).

The boss of European cable operator Liberty Global, Mike Fries, has revealed to investors that they intend to launch “two gigabit cities” in the UK this year via Virgin Media, which as the name suggests could result in related homes gaining access to speeds of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) using the latest network upgrades.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has published their latest results to the end of 2018 (calendar Q4), which saw their network extend to cover another 144,000 premises and their broadband base grow to total 5,224,600 (up by 21.7K in the quarter vs 36.4K in Q3). But they’re also boosting top speeds from 350Mbps to 500Mbps!
