The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) has announced an investment of £3.5m with Openreach (BT) under the existing Digital Durham project, which will see the UK operator extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover another 3,000+ homes and businesses by late June 2021.

Residents and businesses in the neighbouring villages of Hurworth and Hurworth Place in Durham (England) have been left confused after the local Darlington Borough Council (DBC) and Openreach (BT) issued conflicting statements on the status of their “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) network coverage and future rollout plan.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that they’ve completed the deployment of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” network to 2,000 extra premises in the town of Shildon (Durham, England) and 600 premises in Templepatrick (N.Ireland), which can now access download speeds of 516Mbps (soon 1Gbps).

The £34m+ Digital Durham project, which has so far worked with Openreach (BT) to help increase the coverage of FTTC and FTTP based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks to around 96% of local premises, is preparing to tender for a third contract to further extend coverage (starting in 2020).

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that they’ve settled their legal challenge against Durham County Council (England), which began after the operator objected to the “hefty” fees per metre that the authority wanted to charge for laying new fibre optic cable along grass verges.

11th June, 2018 (14 Comments)

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media has taken the unusual decision to sue Durham County Council (England) in the hope that doing so will enable them to lay new fibre optic cable along grass verges and without having to pay “hefty” fees per metre. The case will test the recently revised Electronic Communications Code (ECC).

Residents of three small rural villages in the borough of Darlington (Durham, England) have been left upset after the local council pulled £50K of public investment to help roll-out faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to the area, which is partly due to Openreach trebling their quote for the work.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) has announced that a new deal will result in more than 15,000 extra homes and businesses around the North East of England being put within reach of a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable network by the end of 2018.

The £34m Digital Durham project in North East England, which includes Gateshead, the Tees Valley and Sunderland, claims to have completed its original goal of ensuring that 98% of local premises are covered by a “fibre broadband” network (96% able to receive “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+).

Last year’s effort by the ITS Technology Group to save a struggling fixed wireless broadband network (Digital Teesdale), which was serving fixed wireless broadband to homes across rural parts of the Teesdale valley (east of the Pennines in England), appears to have stumbled after a hike in the spectrum licence made the service economically unviable.

The Digital Durham project in England, which includes Gateshead, Tees Valley, Sunderland and currently aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 98% of local premises by September 2016 (96% will get “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+), has signed a second contract that should push the network coverage near to the magic 100% mark.
