Gigaclear Begins FTTP Broadband Rollout in Uttlesford After Delay

Despite a recent delay to Gigaclear’s state aid supported contract with the Superfast Essex (SFE) project (here), the rural UK ISP has today confirmed that some of the first homes in Uttlesford to benefit from their new 900Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network have now gone live in Birchanger.

South Essex UK Secures £4.5m for New Gigabit Full Fibre Network

The Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA), which consists of Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Essex County, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, has secured an investment of £4.5m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund to help build a new Gigabit broadband network.

Lancashire-based rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) has announced that they intend to almost double their staff count by hiring a further 20 people. The B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) project, which is deploying a community built and funded 1Gbps “full fibre” (FTTH) rural broadband network to homes in several counties, have taken the hopefully temporary decision not to process new EIS1 forms (Enterprise Investment Scheme) for investments made into the ISP.

The Superfast Essex (SFE) project has now confirmed that they too have been affected by Gigaclear’s civil engineering delays, which means that the ISP’s planned roll-out of a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the UK county will now complete in July 2020 instead of December 2019.

Maldon Council Resolve Standoff Over £45K Funding for Broadband

Trouble seems to be brewing in Maldon after councillors on the District Council’s Finance Committee were said to have voted unanimously to ask the full council to scrap its deal for helping to fund the roll-out of “superfast broadband” with Essex County Council, which would have contributed £45,000 to the effort.

The Essex County Council (ECC) has awarded a second £3.1 million contract in their Phase 4a Superfast Essex programme to Gigaclear, which will see the ISP extend their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network to cover an extra 2,100 rural homes and businesses in the Epping Forest District.
