The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today handed down judgement against the market definitions used in Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Review, which upholds the July 2017 ruling (here) and means that the plan to cut leased line charges or force Openreach (BT) to offer Dark Fibre is still stalled.

Mobile operators O2, Three UK and Vodafone have warned that a recent decision by Ofcom, which prevented them from accessing Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and telegraph poles in order to build new fibre optic backhaul links, could hinder the deployment of future ultrafast 5G Mobile services.

Internet service providers that make use of Openreach’s network in the United Kingdom will be pleased to learn that the operator has dropped the price of their 1Gbps and 10Gbps Cablelink services, which are often used to support “fibre broadband” services like FTTC (G.fast or VDSL2) and FTTP.

Openreach (BT) has published another round of price reductions for their Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) products, which primarily focuses upon the connection fees for their 100Mbps service and 1Gbps rental prices. The cuts should start from 1st October 2017, assuming Ofcom’s policy doesn’t change.

Now here’s a product that we didn’t expect. UK ISP Evolving Networks has deployed its first “bonded” Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) connection to a business and they claim that part of the reason for this is because the existing network service is limited to an upload speed of 30Mbps.

Communications provider Entanet, which was acquired by urban fibre optic developer Cityfibre in July 2017 for a cash consideration of £29 million (here), will unveil a range of new “full fibre” (FTTP) based internet access and “unbeatable” business Ethernet services next month.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has announced that it will significantly reduce their 10GE and 100GE (Gigabit) port fees at its regional internet exchange in Manchester (IXManchester), which will come into effect from 1st October 2017 and save up to 39.3% on the cost.

The proposed Dark Fibre Access product from Openreach (BT), which would have allowed rival ISPs to gain “physical access” to the operator’s existing fibre optic cables (i.e. enabling them to install their own equipment at either end of the fibre within cable ducts), has today officially been cancelled.. for now.

The telecoms regulator has today set out “detailed pricing proposals” for Openreach’s (BT) new Duct and Pole Access product, which allows their existing telegraph poles and underground cable ducts to be used by rivals in order to deploy new ultrafast broadband services (e.g. FTTP/H).

Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (here), which last year pledged to open up access to Openreach’s (BT) national Dark Fibre network, cut leased line (Ethernet) prices and deliver quicker installs, has been sent back to the drawing board by the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT).

Fibre optic builder Cityfibre has today announced that the first connections on their new £3.24 million Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband and Ethernet network in Southend-on-Sea have gone live. The deployment in Essex is being supported by business ISP Onecom.

The ITS Technology group has appointed Hub Network Services (HNS) to become the wholesale provider for Bristol City Council’s recently re-purposed BNET fibre optic Ethernet and broadband network, which was commercialised to supply Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) services to local businesses.

Openreach (BT) has uploaded a new technical information document for their imminent Dark Fibre Access (DFA) trial, which is due to start in August. The document describes how the product works and sets out what solutions will be made available to ISPs.

Last month ISPreview.co.uk reported (here) that a new ISP called G.Networks was aiming to roll-out a Gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to serve small businesses (SMEs) in central London. The provider has now secured £4.6m from Albion Capital to support their ambition.

UK ISP TalkTalk has reportedly complained that BT is not offering them enough compensation, which comes after Ofcom ruled in March 2017 that Openreach had broken their rules by failing to pay ISPs proper compensation for late installations of high-speed business lines (Ethernet).

The enterprise division of SSE Telecoms has announced that their on-going ‘Project Edge‘ fibre optic network expansion in the United Kingdom will soon unbundle another 40 BT Exchanges in “prime business areas” and leverage Openreach’s new Dark Fibre Access (DFA) service.

After years of fighting, the Court of Appeal has rejected BT’s most recent attempt to stop a ruling by Ofcom over the rate of interest payable in respect to their past overcharging for Ethernet services, which could force them to pay £22m+ to rivals. Next stop.. Supreme Court?
