New research from Point Topic has revealed how the adoption rates of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks vary between 30 countries within Europe (i.e. how many subscribers take the service vs premises passed). Overall, the average take-up stands at 54.4% (up from 53.3% in mid-2021), while the UK scores just 34.7%.

The Zayo Group, which operates a large metro and long-haul fibre optic network that delivers global reach, has announced an expansion of their “near-net” that will put their 100Gbps capable connectivity within reach of thousands more businesses across Western Europe (inc. the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, and France).

The tumbling share price of European satellite operator Eutelsat has effectively more than halved the value of the UK Government’s associated stake in OneWeb (currently worth c.£200m). The operator is now facing more pressure to secure a key EU satellite broadband contract, which won’t be easy due to.. politics.

Customers of EE (BT) are venting frustration after the mobile operator twice increased the price of their “Roam Abroad” add-on – making for a hike of 150% within the past year. The pass allows customers to use their existing allowances, at no extra charge, while in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand plus 47 European destinations.

Ofcom has today proposed new rules to force mobile network operators, such as Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2 (inc. MVNO operators), to protect consumers who travel abroad from mobile BILL SHOCKS on data (broadband), call and text charges by introducing new roaming alert protections for consumers and small businesses.

But the focus this time will be on giving people low cost travel data all around the world.

Colt Technology Services has confirmed the completion of a new multi-Terabit speed capable Dark Fibre (G.652D/G.657) cable along the Channel Tunnel, which runs between the UK (Folkestone, Kent) and France (Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais) under the English Channel sea.

A new MSE report has called on Ofcom to improve consumer protection measures for mobile roaming when within the EU, which follows after the organisation’s research highlighted that consumers are still at risk of being caught out by unexpected roaming costs. But operators aren’t helping by adopting different definitions of a “day“.

The mobile division of supermarket giant ASDA has begun notifying customers of a huge price hike to their Pay As You Go (PAYG) services, while also revealing that they will slash the amount of inclusive data (mobile broadband) that you can use while roaming within the EU from 25GB (GigaBytes) to just 5GB per bundle!

Mobile operator giffgaff has today followed Tesco Mobile’s recent, if controversial, decision (here) to end free EU roaming for UK customers by announcing a huge 75% reduction in inclusive data roaming (mobile broadband) from 20 GigaBytes (GB) to just 5GB, as well as rates of 10p per MegaByte (MB) beyond that.

Customers of mobile operator Tesco Mobile have been left shocked and disappointed after the operator quietly updated their Terms & Conditions on 16th June 2022, which means that new or upgrading subscribers will no longer be able to benefit from free EU roaming – effective from 1st January 2023.
