Network operator Zayo Europe, which runs a large high-capacity metro and long-haul fibre optic network across Europe, has today announced that they’ve introduced a new DWDM (wavelength) fibre route connecting London to Paris. The move boosts their capacity between the UK and France, while providing a diverse alternative on their existing cable system.

Mobile operator Tesco Mobile has once again extended their Home From Home (HFH) EU roaming offer for another year, until 2026. Customers can thus continue to tap into their UK minutes, texts and data (mobile broadband) allowances, at no extra cost, when travelling around 48 destinations in the EU and beyond.

Telecoms analyst firm Juniper Research has used an April 2024 survey of 3,300 UK mobile subscribers to identify that iD Mobile ranks top as the “leading network operator in the UK for subscriber roaming satisfaction in 2024“, which saw them achieve a net promoter score of 77%.

Some of Vodafone’s UK customers have questioned the mobile network operator’s claim that their inclusive roaming feature comes at “no extra cost”, particularly after a stealthy 22p call fee was introduced. But you’d have to dig deeper into their website to find it and the charge doesn’t apply to everybody.

Low-cost UK mobile operator iD Mobile (Currys), which harnesses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement, has announced that they’re offering sports fans heading to the Euros in Germany, and the Olympics in Paris, unlimited free roaming data (mobile broadband) for the duration of the events this summer.

A new company called IOEMA Fibre has announced plans to build a new 1,371km long repeatered subsea fibre optic cable between the United Kingdom and several neighbouring countries in Europe, including the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Norway. The total “minimum” capacity of this will reach a blistering 1.3 Petabits per second!

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today finalised new rules – due to be enforced from 1st October 2024 – that will require mobile network operators, such as Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2 (inc. MVNO operators), to protect consumers who travel abroad from mobile BILL SHOCKS on data (broadband), call and text charges.

New research from Point Topic has revealed how the adoption rates of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks vary between 30 countries within Europe (i.e. how many subscribers take the service vs premises passed). Overall, the average take-up stands at 54.4% (up from 53.3% in mid-2021), while the UK scores just 34.7%.
