The House of Lords Select Committee Inquiry into the UK government’s superfast broadband plan has published its first report, which criticises the lack of “strategy” and failure to focus upon “eliminating” the rural digital divide. Crucially it calls for the roll-out of a “robust and resilient national network” that should be linked primarily by open access fibre optic lines; but only if home owners pay for it first.

The Communities Partnership Executive of North Dorset (CPEND) claims to have gained a positive response from DEFRA’s Rural Communities Broadband Fund (RCBF) after it proposed to solve local rural broadband woes by laying a fibre optic cable along a former railway line (trailway) that runs from Sturminster Newton to Blandford.

Ofcom has today proposed new controls that will “lead to [a] real-terms price reduction” of BTWholesale’s Leased Line services, which are used by businesses, mobile operators and broadband ISPs around the UK. The move is part of the regulators wider review (detailed here) into the country’s £2bn market for business telecoms.

A multi-national team of scientists working out of the University of Southern California (USC) have successfully tested a new networking technology that can “twist light” to send data at a staggering speed of up to 2.56Tbps (Terabits per second)! The solution could “potentially” be adapted for use in fibre optic cables or even satellite links.

CityFibre Holdings, which builds UK fibre optic broadband infrastructure (FTTP) for business, public sector and domestic needs, has criticised BT for choosing to “soft-pedal” on the roll-out of true Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband services because of an “overwhelming bias” towards slower FTTC technology.

Unfortunately any ISP hoping for improved access to BT’s network of dark fibre lines will be displeased, yet they do propose to regulate 1Gbps+ wholesale leased lines that exist outside London.
