UK Government Sacks Man Who Questioned BT Superfast Broadband Costs

The government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has allegedly sacked the author of an internal discussion paper that questioned some of the costs of BT’s financial model for delivering superfast broadband (FTTC) services into the “final third” of mostly rural parts of the UK.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has announced that ISPs offering its up to 80Mbps capable superfast broadband (FTTC) service will from next year be able to discount the connection fee to £30 +vat (normally £80) for a period of 6 months.

Suffolk Council UK Awards GBP40m Superfast Broadband Contract to BT

The Suffolk County Council (SCC) has today confirmed that its £40 million contract to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services available to 85-90% of local homes and businesses by 2015 has unsurprisingly been awarded to BT. Just 2% of the “hardest to reach premises” will be left with sub-5Mbps speeds.

Ofcom Clear BT Superfast Broadband Discount for London and the North West

Ofcom has approved BTOpenreach’s request to extend a connection price discount for its superfast broadband (FTTC) lines by two months, which cut the one-off cost from £80 to just £30 +vat when taken alongside a new phone line (WLR or MPF). Sadly only ISP customers in certain parts of England (UK) will benefit.

BT has announced that customers who take one of its superfast broadband BTInfinity (FTTC / P) packages (costing from just £18 a month) will from 26th October 2012 also get a FREE YouView set-top-box (normally £299) with no TV subscription fee. Except it’s not completely “free“.

The government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, has today confirmed the final funding allocations for 10 of the largest UK cities (including all four capitals) in its now £114.1m strong Urban Broadband Fund, which aims to support the roll-out of “ultrafast” (80-100Mbps) broadband ISP services and “high speed public wi-fi“.
