The £29.75m Connecting Cambridgeshire project in England, which aimed to make BT’s superfast broadband (24Mbps+) network available to 90% of premises in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by the end of 2015 (98% for the raw “fibre broadband” footprint), has today officially completed its target.

Some Internet providers appear to have been left confused and uncertain about whether to adopt BTOpenreach’s new Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL) product, which launched last Saturday and offers superfast broadband download speeds of ‘up to’ 55Mbps and uploads of 10Mbps.

The latest statistics from Point Topic reveal that the total number of world fixed broadband subscriptions reached approximately 738 million in Q3 2015, with the vast majority of growth being driven by fibre optic (FTTH/C/P) based technologies; albeit mostly in parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America.

BTOpenreach has recently updated their Superfast Openreach website, specifically its ‘Where and When‘ broadband availability checker map tool, to provide users with an easier to understand tester and a smidgen of additional street cabinet level data.

Today we publish our third and probably final annual summary of home routers with integrated VDSL2 modems, which are designed to be used with superfast “fibre broadband” offering ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, PlusNet, Sky Broadband etc.) that use the FTTC / VDSL2 technology (FTTrN and FTT-Basement also use VDSL2).

The Digital Scotland project has today announced that 500,000 additional premises have now been put within reach of BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, but there’s still no sign of the expected second contract in order to help expand coverage beyond the current target(s).

Internet provider TalkTalk has today become the latest to launch a new batch of discounts for Christmas, which are being headlined by the offers of 18 months free unlimited broadband (up to 17Mbps) or 12 months free unlimited “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (up to 38Mbps FTTC).

Sky Broadband informs that they will today launch a Christmas and New Year offer on their ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband package, which will make the service free for the first 12 months (£10 a month thereafter) and they’re also throwing in a £50 M&S e-voucher. Elsewhere Sky Fibre (up to 38Mbps) is also being cut to just £5 per month.

The UK Government has allocated £2 million of additional public investment from a new fund to help improve the coverage of ultrafast broadband (100Mbps+) services in rural areas around Gloucestershire (England), with a particular focus on poorly served parts in the Forest of Dean.

In a surprise move BTOpenreach has today unveiled a new middle tier bandwidth product for their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “fibre broadband” services, which offers download speeds of up to 55Mbps and uploads of 10Mbps.

BTOpenreach has today formally confirmed that the ‘Basic Engineer’ and also ‘Managed Engineer’ Installation options for their ‘up to’ 80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband lines, specifically those installs that included a simple VDSL Modem (pictured), will be withdrawn from 31st March 2016.
