The UK and Welsh Governments have today jointly announced that the £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which normally offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and surrounding homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP connection (ideally “full fibre” FTTP), is to be boosted up to £5,500 in Wales.

Openreach (BT) has today officially launched its first major industry consultation on the process of switching from their old legacy copper broadband and phone lines to new ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure, which includes discussions over how they should “eventually retire the existing copper network.”

A bit of good news from rural “full fibre” provider Gigaclear, for a change. The ISP has announced that Greenmeadows Park (Bamfurlong, Cheltenham), which was last year named as the slowest street for broadband speeds in the United Kingdom, has now become one of the fastest after a 900Mbps+ capable FTTH network went live.

Full fibre builder Cityfibre has announced that they will invest £75m to expand the reach of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network across the cities of Bournemouth and Northampton, which will join the other 10 cities confirmed under Phase One and take their coverage to 1 million UK premises.

Fibre optic UK ISP Hyperoptic has announced that 20,000 units belonging to Network Homes, which is a primarily London focused housing association, will be the next in line to be covered by their 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband network.

The UK Government has officially backed a bid to extend £18.7m of public funding so that it can be used to further extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) in Devon and Somerset up to March 2023, which follows various historic and recent delays to the project’s roll-out plan. Sadly they’ve yet to resolve the Gigaclear situation.

On 1st April 2019 the Scottish Government will go one big step further than the UK Government in Westminster by introducing 100% relief from business rates on new “fibre broadband infrastructure“. Better yet, the tax break is set to last for 10 long years until 31st March 2029.

The CEO of Sky UK (Sky Broadband), Stephen van Rooyen, has written a letter to the heads of several alternative “full fibre” (FTTP) network ISPs, seemingly in the hope of opening talks that could result in new wholesale or other agreements to help “increase investment” and “bring ultrafast broadband to more homes.”

The CEO of UK fibre optic network builder Cityfibre, Greg Mesch, has today become the first person to receive the first Charles Kao Award at the annual FTTH Conference in Amsterdam, which recognises the “extraordinary contribution” of an individual to the acceleration of full fibre (FTTH / FTTB) broadband deployment.

Predictably.. we’re at the bottom.

The mains fixed line and mobile telecoms operator for the Isle of Man (British Crown Dependency), Manx Telecom, has recommended that its shareholders accept a £255.9m offer from Basalt Infrastructure Partners II GP Limited to acquire the business. The move is likely to boost investment in their FTTP and 5G roll-out.

The Government has today confirmed which UK regions have so far secured £53m out of the £95m allocation that was made available to local authorities as part of the £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund last year (Wave 3), which aims to stimulate commercial investment in “gigabit capable” broadband networks.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has announced that residents in the Poppleton area of York are the latest to get access to their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which as reported last week (here) has already covered 33,000 premises in the city and should reach 55,000 by 2020.

The Welsh Government have changed their “processes” in order to make it harder for professional lobbyists’ to access ministers, which occurred after a “misunderstanding” resulted in lobbyist Daran Hill attending a meeting between the Economy Minister, Ken Stakes, and UK fibre optic broadband ISP Cityfibre.
