The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has opened a new consultation on a change to help foster the roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks by preventing BT from reducing its wholesale charges for slower hybrid fibre (FTTC) connections in areas where rivals are building new networks.

The Government has today launched a new review that will examine what changes need to be made (e.g. planning, copper switch-off) in order to make the United Kingdom attractive for investment to support the rollout of new “full fibre” broadband (FTTP/H) and future 5G Mobile networks.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has announced that a commercial investment of £2.5 million is enabling some 2,000 premises in rural Devon (England) to access their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband network.

A new provider called Cambridge Fibre Networks, which doesn’t yet appear to have a website, has applied to Ofcom for Code Powers in order to help it construct a new multi-Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband network for homes and businesses around the East and West of Cambridge.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today determined that it is “not materially misleading” to describe broadband services that use fibre optic cables for only part of the connection to consumers’ homes (e.g. FTTC) as “fibre broadband“, much to the annoyance of UK MPs and critics.

The Government’s Chancellor, Philip Hammond MP, has today given his Autumn Budget 2017 speech and committed to invest £500 million into a “range of initiatives from artificial intelligence, to 5G and full fibre broadband” (£385m for the latter two specifically). But it’s not “new” money.

The boss of rural ISP B4RN, which is rolling out a 1Gbps community-built and funded fibre optic (FTTH) broadband network to homes in Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, has warned that the UK Gov’s proposed 10Mbps USO may force them to “retrench within our current boundaries.”

Urban fibre optic network builder and ISP Hyperoptic, which is deploying their FTTP/B ultrafast 1Gbps capable broadband network around parts of 28 cities and towns, has today boasted of working with 100 developers in the United Kingdom (e.g. Barratt London, Berkeley Homes, Crest Nicholson etc.).

A further 150 businesses in the South Fengate part of Peterborough (Cambridgeshire, UK) can now access a 1Gbps capable connection, which comes after Cityfibre completed the 4km extension of their existing c.120km fibre optic Ethernet and broadband network in the cathedral city.

The Ranston Estate has agreed terms to acquire M12 Solutions’s share of their alternative network ISP Wessex Internet, which has deployed a mix of fibre optic (FTTH) and fixed wireless broadband services into rural parts of North Dorset, South Wiltshire and East Somerset in England.

Rural UK ISP Gigaclear has signed a new deal with civil engineering company the John Henry Group, which will help to extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/H) broadband network to 21,000 homes and businesses in the East Midlands (Northamptonshire, UK).

UK Internet provider TalkTalk has today published their interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2017 (H1 2018), which reveals that they added +46,000 new on-net broadband subscribers in the period to total 3,993,000 (29% of those use their FTTC/H “fibre broadband” network).

Vodafone has published their latest Q3 2017 (calendar) results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow by +33,000 in the quarter to total 278,000 (better than the +29K added in Q2). Meanwhile 4G Mobile coverage (population) has reached 97% of the UK and they’ve cut their FTTC prices.

The Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which is deploying a “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband network to a number of rural Buckinghamshire (England, UK) villages, is currently said to be “considering expressions of interest” from potential buyers and this week also saw the operator’s MD depart.

In a major development Cityfibre and ISP Vodafone have this morning announced a new “long-term strategic partnership” that will bring Gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTH) broadband to “up to” 5 million homes and businesses across the United Kingdom by 2025, with the rollout starting by mid-2018.

Cable operator WightFibre has this week taken the wraps off their plan to deploy a new “full fibre” (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network to cover 53,000 of the 61,000 homes on the Isle of Wight (Hampshire, UK) by the end of 2022, which is being supported by an investment of £35 million (Infracapital).
