The CEO of Luminet, Sasha Williamson, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part of our new interview that the United Kingdom should focus on deploying Gigabit capable broadband networks “nationwide” and that the plan for a 10Mbps minimum download speed (USO) is “laughable in this digital age.”

The Government’s Digital Minister, Matt Hancock, has told the Broadband Stakeholder Group 2017 Conference that existing hybrid fibre FTTC services are “not fit for the future” and that they will “strain every sinew” (wrong fibre Matt) to get “full fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband rolled out in Britain.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

After conducting an industry consultation Openreach (BT) has today claimed that ISPs offered “broad support” for their proposal to conduct a “large scale” rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband across the UK, which could in theory reach 10 million premises by 2025. But no deal.. yet.

The CEO of rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, Matthew Hare, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part of a brief interview that the country needs a new “national plan“, which acknowledges and “prioritises” the need to roll-out full fibre (FTTH/P) broadband networks across the whole of the United Kingdom.

Earlier this year Gigaclear “regretfully decided to withdraw” from the West Oxfordshire Superfast Broadband project, which followed a dispute with their supplier ITS Technology Group (here). But the good news is that the ISP has signed a new deal to rollout FTTP broadband to 10,000+ rural premises.

Openreach’s (BT) Chairman, Mike McTighe, has told the Broadband World Forum that “we are getting to the point where the copper will run out of steam” and there’s a need to focus on “full fibre” (FTTP/H), but he warned that this could only be done with ISP support and “increases in wholesale pricing.”

Urban focused ISP Community Fibre has claimed that their deployment of 1Gbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTH/B) to all 1,700 properties on the Churchill Gardens Estate in Pimlico (Westminster) makes it the “largest full fibre-optic estate anywhere” in central London.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which is rolling out a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTP/B) broadband network in 28 UK cities and towns, has announced that their 20Mbps and 100Mbps packages will from tomorrow see a free 50% speed boost. On top of that they’ve also given their branding a new lick of paint.

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has signed a new £200m contract with civil engineering giant Carillion telent, which will help to support the rollout of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) ultrafast broadband network to more than 80,000 premises in rural South West England.

Small and medium sized businesses (SME) on the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, which sits on the southern end of Spain’s Iberian Peninsula in the Mediterranean sea, can now get access to symmetrical broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps via GibFibre‘s fibre optic (FTTH/B) network.

Scientists working out of the Optical Networks Group at University College London have developed a cheaper and simpler receiver for optical “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband networks, which makes it possible to dedicate a wavelength of light to each subscriber and “avoid bandwidth sharing.”

Nokia says they will become the first to demonstrate a hybrid Wireless Passive Optical Network (PON) solution at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin, which can offer up to 1Gbps broadband speeds to homes by harnessing both an optical fibre network and WiGig’s 60GHz wireless standard (802.11ad).

The European Commission’s (EC) competition regulator has called on the UK Government to defend its business rates regime after an unidentified complainant alleged that the charges, which are managed by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), were being abused to provide “illegal state aid” to BT.
