Liberty Global, which is parent to UK cable operator Virgin Media, has today launched a new initiative called GIGAWorld that will help to promote their plans for rolling out Gigabit capable broadband (1000Mbps+) to the 12 European countries in which it operates (most could be done by the end of 2018).

A new Vodafone commissioned study from Point Topic has predicted that only 6.5% of UK households can expect to be covered by Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable FTTP/H fibre optic broadband cables by 2020, but other data from Point Topic forecasts a figure of 9.4% when business premises are included.

The Government has admitted that the United Kingdom is “falling behind on the roll out of full-fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband and confirmed that tomorrows Autumn Statement will aim to rectify that via a new £1bn Digital Infrastructure Fund, which should help 2 million extra homes get access.

Earlier this year Hyperoptic announced that they’d be extending their 1000Mbps (1Gbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise / Building (FTTP/B) based ultrafast broadband network to 7 extra “hyper-cities” in the UK (here) and today the first buildings have now started to go live in Edinburgh (Scotland).

TalkTalk has published their latest interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2016 (H1 2017), which saw them lose fewer on-net broadband customers (-29,000) in the period to total 3,967,000 and 21% of those (779K) take their FTTC “fibre broadband” products (with 2,500 on FTTP in York).

Fibre optic ISP TrueSpeed has hinted to Ofcom that its 150Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network, which is currently rolling out to parts of the Chew Valley in rural North East Somerset (England), could also be expanded into Devon, Wiltshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

Cable operator WightFibre, which serves homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight (an island just off the south coast in Hampshire, England) with TV and broadband speeds of up to 152Mbps, has announced the completion of a major network upgrade that has “increased capacity 32 times over“.

Homes in the rural Gloucestershire village of Miserden have apparently been taken out of the broadband “dark ages” after a little known VoIP provider called Voneus built a new fibre optic (FTTP/H) and wireless network into the area, which has made speeds of 100Mbps available to residents.

A touch of confusion rang out this morning after utility infrastructure provider GTC “unveiled” its “UltraStream300” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network solution for UK house builders to use. Except they’ve already been offering a 300Mbps FTTH solution like this since 2014.

After leaving us in suspense TalkTalk and Cityfibre have today confirmed that their joint 940Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband trial in the city of York (England) will be extended from 14,000 premises passed today to another 40,000 over the next 2 years; supported by a new investment of £20m.

Openreach (BT) and Huawei have today claimed to be the “first companies in Europe” to trial three new ultrafast fibre optic broadband technologies, including 40Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable NG-PON2, 10Gbps XGS-PON and 2.5Gbps GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) over a single fibre.

A new report from Ovum, which was jointly commissioned by BT and Australia’s nbn, has forecast that some 29 million subscribers will be using a G.fast based ultrafast broadband connection by 2021 (3% of the global fixed broadband market) and most of those will be in Western Europe.

The West Sussex County Council has proposed a new “Gigabit West Sussex” framework that will shortly start seeking suppliers to help it “bring ultrafast [FTTP/H broadband] to as many parts of the County as possible,” starting with a contract to deploy a new Dark Fibre network in Adur & Worthing.
