Budget ISP TalkTalk has confirmed that they are in “discussions” with Infracapital over a plan to jointly create an independent company, with a total investment of around £1.5bn, that could provide 1Gbps ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband to over 3 million premises in mid-sized UK towns and cities.

The London Borough of Bexley has become the latest local authority to put in a bid to the UK government’s £200m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) programme, which could help to build a Gigabit broadband capable network to connect local public sector and business sites.

Lately it’s been raining hard in deepest rural Devon (England), so hard in fact that some locals are concerned that the good work being done by Gigaclear’s contractors to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the area could soon be washed away.

BT has released their latest results to the end of 2017 (Q4 calendar), which saw their retail UK broadband ISP base add 35K subscribers to total 9,342,000 (vs +22K in Q3). Meanwhile their FTTP and G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services reached 886,000 premises (up from 770K).

The North Skye Broadband project, which had been hoping to secure state aid in order to help fund a pilot rollout of FTTP ultrafast broadband to hundreds of rural premises on the Isle of Skye (North side) in Scotland, has reluctantly abandoned its plan due to the R100 procurement process.

The latest Q4 2017 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base grew by +39,000 in the quarter to total 316,000 (up from the +33K added in Q3), which in recent months has been boosted by some very aggressive FTTC price cutting.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they intend to deploy Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) ultrafast broadband to 3 million premises in 8 major UK cities by 2020 via their new ‘Fibre First‘ build programme, which is up from the current target of 2 million by the same date.

The total number of world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.38% in Q3 2017 and now stands at 913.3 Million (up by nearly 70 million over the past year). Meanwhile the number of copper lines (ADSL etc.) fell by 6.3% over the past year and “full fibre” FTTH/P connections increased by 30.4%.

The Aylesbury Vale District Council in Buckinghamshire has set out details and a timetable for their review into the Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which after concerns over rollout progress and funding was recently sold (FTTH network assets) to UK ISP Gigaclear for an undisclosed sum.
