A new report from Audit Scotland, which works to ensure that public money in Scotland is spent correctly, has found that the £410m Digital Scotland roll-out programme with BT has achieved its initial coverage target. But delivering 95% “fibre broadband” coverage by December 2017 “will be more challenging.”

BT has confirmed that around 3,000 homes and businesses in Mayfair (London’s West End) are among the first to benefit from its expanded roll-out of “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology, which is today being demoed to local councillors in the area.

The Superfast Worcestershire (England) project appears to have successfully completed its original contract with Openreach (BT), which has now extended their FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network to 90% of the county (i.e. 94% “fibre” coverage inc. sub-24Mbps areas).

The Aylesbury Vale Broadband project in rural Buckinghamshire (England) has confirmed that their 300Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network has now completed its extension via private land from North Marston and managed to reach the village of Swanbourne.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has issued an update on the £5.6m deal with Edinburgh City Council in Scotland, which is extending their existing Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network in the city to around 150km. The work is now expected to complete by the end of next month.

Newspaper reports claim that telecoms giant Vodafone, which only recently launched a range of its own fixed line broadband services using Openreach’s (BT) national ADSL2+ and FTTC network, could be planning to build their own fibre optic network in the United Kingdom to rival BT and Virgin Media.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which is working with Openreach (BT) to make superfast broadband (30Mbps+) services available to around 91% of local premises by June 2017, has put forward a revised Phase 3 roll-out plan that could extend local coverage to nearly 96% by mid-2019.

WightFibre, which is a cable (DOCSIS) operator that delivers 152Mbps broadband and TV across the Isle of Wight (South Coast of Hampshire, England), has deployed a 1000Mbps fibre optic (FTTH/P) network to a development of new build homes in the village of Wootton and more will follow.

A framework for the next decade of UK telecoms and broadband regulation has today been set out by Ofcom, which will see Openreach improve service quality, become more independent and give rival ISPs more access to their cable ducts. But the regulator has yet to reach a solid agreement with BT and a split is still on the table.
