UK ISP TalkTalk has today issued a Q2 2016 (calendar) trading update, which confirms that they lost another 9,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter (est. total 3,987,000) and their joint 940Mbps FTTH network roll-out with Sky and Cityfibre in the City of York (England) has covered 11,000 premises.

The Merseyside Connected project, which since 2013 has been working with Openreach (BT) to expand “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 98% of local homes and businesses in Merseyside by the end of July 2016 (note: 90% covered by 24Mbps+ speeds), now looks set to complete its contract in September 2016.

Independent ISP Hyperoptic, which is currently rolling out their own 1Gbps (Gigabit per second) Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/B) broadband network to around 500,000 homes in 20 cities across the United Kingdom, has secured a huge £21m loan from the European Investment Bank.

Future subscribers taking part in Openreach’s (BT) new trial of 1000Mbps “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) broadband technology in Bradford (West Yorkshire, England) will now benefit from even faster upload speeds than originally expected (up to 220Mbps), as well as a free connection and rental.

Sky Broadband appears to have sharply reduced the price of their 50-940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based “Ultra Fibre Optic” (UFO) broadband packages in the city of York (North Yorkshire), which is still being jointly rolled out alongside partners TalkTalk and Cityfibre.

Utility infrastructure builder GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK) has unveiled a new deal with property developer Bovis Homes, which will result in 3,650 New Build Homes in Wellingborough (Northamptonshire, England) being connected to their 300Mbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network.

Coax cable (DOCSIS) and fibre optic provider Virgin Media has today announced the next batch of 30 communities and villages from across England and Wales that will benefit from an upgrade to their FTTP ultrafast broadband (up to 300Mbps) and TV network, as voted for by residents of each area.

Hull telecoms operator KCOM has today announced the next batch of roll-out locations for their new “Lightstream” fibre optic (FTTP/C) broadband network. Overall 5,000 properties in the Bricknell Avenue area and a similar number in Hedon and Preston should be covered by the end of 2016.

The £20.62m West Sussex Better Connected project in England claims to have completed its first roll-out contract with Openreach (BT), which originally aimed to ensure that “fibre broadband [FTTC/P] will be rolled out to around 98% of [local] homes and businesses” by Spring 2016.

Cityfibre has today confirmed that the large Buckinghamshire (England) town of Milton Keynes will become the latest to join their flock, with a new 160km long Gigabit capable fibre optic broadband network being made available to local businesses, schools and colleges.

CityFibre has announced that their 90km long fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network in the city of Peterborough (East England), which was completed over one year ago and originally only intended to connect 107 public sector sites, has now received an order to connect another 220.

The leader of Hampshire County Council in England, Roy Perry, has warned that bringing superfast broadband to rural premises in the final 4% of the region will present “significant challenges” (very expensive) and that in the end it may be left up to “self-funding providers” and inferior Satellite.

Openreach recently announced that their ultra-fast 330Mbps capable (soon to reach 1Gbps) Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network will reach 2 million UK premises by 2020 (here), but residential users face a limited choice of affordable ISPs and BT’s rivals see adoption problems.

Lord Smith of Finsbury (Chris Smith), who is Chairman of the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Agency, has put down another complaint against ISPs that promote slower hybrid-fibre FTTC (VDSL) connections as “fibre optic broadband“. Apparently it’s because pure FTTP/H lines are still too “niche,” but he acknowledges that this may change in the future.
