The £41m state aid supported Better Broadband for Norfolk programme, which is working with BT to help make superfast fibre broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services reach “more than” 80% of local premises by autumn 2015, has announced the first locations to be upgraded.

The Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has today signed a new state aid supported deal with BT that will see the operators superfast fibre broadband (25Mbps+) services being deployed to cover 91% of local premises by Spring 2016.

The East Sussex County Council (ESCC) in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Councils (Southern England) has signed a new £35.44 million state aid supported contract with BT to roll-out superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services to 96% of local premises “within the next three years” (mid-2016).

Management consultancy giant Arthur D. Little has published a new paper that examines the importance of investing in better telecoms infrastructure. It also predicts that the UK might need to adopt ultrafast (100Mbps+) fibre optic FTTH broadband “over the next five years“, unless G.Fast is realised to expand the life of FTTC.

The publication of BT’s new Better Future programme has caused confusion after one of its aspirations promised to make their “fibre based” (FTTC/P) superfast broadband ISP products available to “nine out of ten premises” in the UK by 2020, which appears to be three years behind the original aim of 2017.

The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) in southern England has today signed a new £20.1 million state aid supported contract with BT that will aim to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP connections available to 98% of local premises by the “start” of Spring 2016 (the rest will get at least 2Mbps).

BTOpenreach has this week dispatched one of its survey teams to begin preliminary work on their previously announced £3.7m project to divert two unused submarine fibre optic cables to the Isles of Scilly (here), which will support the rollout of superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) ISP products on the islands.

The launch of BT’s new 330Mbps capable FTTP-on-Demand (FTTPoD) service, which will eventually make true fibre optic connectivity available to all FTTC supporting lines, has been given a cautious welcome by most ISPs; though some aren’t quite sure how it fits into the market or whether domestic or even business customers will want it.

BT has today signed a new deal worth £28.5 million with four Cheshire councils (England), which will make its superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) ISP services available to “around” 96% of homes and businesses (over 400,000 premises) across Cheshire, Halton and Warrington by the end of 2016.

The Durham County Council (DCC) in North East England (UK) has today signed a new state aid supported £24 million deal with BT that will see “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) services being rolled out to “around” 94% of local premises by the end of 2016.

BT has unsurprisingly abandoned their original 2009 commitment to make ultrafast fibre optic FTTP broadband ISP services available to 2.5 million premises in the United Kingdom and will instead focus on the more economical but slower FTTC solution and the expensive new FTTP-on-Demand (FTTPoD) service.

BTOpenreach has announced that ISPs in the United Kingdom will be able to offer its new 220Mbps (20Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband product to their customers from 1st June 2013. Final prices have also been confirmed.

The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in North East England has today signed a new £18.9 million state aid supported deal with BT that will make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) speeds available to 91% of premises by early 2016 (95% will be covered by the fibre optic based FTTC network but some won’t be “superfast“).
