Communications provider Daisy Wholesale has joined the first pilot of FTTP-On-Demand technology, which allows BT to deploy “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (Megabits) capable fibre optic broadband ISP speeds over their existing and slower FTTC lines (due to cover 66% of the UK by the end of 2014).

BTOpenreach has proposed to extend a special offer, which slashed the £80 +vat one-off connection fee for new superfast broadband (FTTC or FTTP) lines down to just £30, for another two months. But there’s a catch, the extended offer would only be available to “specific geographies” around England.

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for managing access to and building BT’s national UK telecoms network, has announced plans to recruit 400 new engineers. The new staff will hopefully help to tackle delayed installations and boost the roll-out of its superfast broadband (e.g. FTTC) ISP services.

Communications provider Entanet UK has warned that the new generation of superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services “will only be sustainable” if BTWholesale is forced by the telecoms regulator to cut wholesale bandwidth charges for ISPs.

Hull’s incumbent telecoms operator, KC, claims to have “completely eradicated” broadband “not spots” in its corner of Yorkshire (England). The development, which comes a full three years ahead of the UK government’s 2015 target, means that 100% should now be able to access download speeds of at least 2Mbps (Megabits per second).

This is where the phone line for a home is connected directly to a telephone exchange and does not go through a street cabinet.
