The UK telecoms regulator has today issued an update on Openreach’s legal separation from BT. Overall they were “broadly satisfied with progress,” although Ofcom still wants to see more progress being made on improving “full fibre” (FTTP) and general broadband ISP connectivity.

BT Group has released their latest results to the end of September 2018 (Q2 – 18/19 financial), which reveals that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) G.fast network has reached 1290000 UK premises and FTTP covers 682,000 (13,000+ to “full fibre” per week). Plus there’s £712m to boost “fibre” cover.

We’ve managed to extract some useful progress updates from our industry sources on various different broadband related developments and technologies within Openreach’s (BT) UK ISP network, which covers FTTP, G.fast, SOGEA, 21CN migrations and the forthcoming addition of new install options.

New customers who sign-up for one of BT’s standard “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC/P) and phone packages are now being offered a “FREE” Fitbit Charge 3 activity tracker smartwatch (RRP £129.99). On top of that they’ll also get a Prepaid Mastercard, which on some deals can be worth up to £90.

Internet and UK web hosting provider Freeola has launched a new limited time offer, which will give new customers three months of “totally free” broadband but only if they pay for a full year in advance. The deal appears to be available across all of their internet access services (ADSL, FTTC, FTTP and G.fast).

During a routine check we noticed that UK ISP iDNET appears to have joined the club of providers that are now selling packages based off Openreach’s new hybrid fibre G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) technology, which can offer maximum download speeds of up to 160Mbps or 330Mbps. They’ve also revised their FTTP plans.

BT’s Consumer Test and Trials team has begun inviting a select few of their UK home broadband subscribers to take part in a new beta trial of their forthcoming “Smart Hub 2” (SH2) wireless router, which is naturally promising to deliver “even better performance and new features“.

BT’s consumer ISP division has sweetened their current discounts on some ADSL2+, FTTC (VDSL2), FTTP and G.fast based broadband and phone packages by throwing in a “free” Amazon Echo (2nd Generation) smart speaker with new orders, which is on top of their existing reward cards (Prepaid Mastercards up to £100).

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has recruited TV celebrity Dominic Littlewood – famous for The One Show, Fake Britain and Cowboy Builders (among others) – to help support their on-going campaign against “misleading” uses of “fibre” terminology in adverts by slower hybrid fibre broadband ISPs.

Business and residential ISP Giganet (M12 Solutions), which is positioning itself to be a single source provider in the UK telecoms market, has launched its new website with packages across a variety of Openreach (BT) and alternative network based Leased Lines (Ethernet), FTTC, G.fast and FTTP broadband connections.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has this week become the latest provider to launch a range of residential “ultrafast broadband” packages using hybrid fibre G.fast technology, which can offer average download speeds of 145Mbps (30Mbps upload) or 300Mbps (50Mbps upload).

ISP Vodafone has today revealed how much UK consumers will need to pay in order to access their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based “Gigafast Broadband” network, which is initially being rolled out to cover 1 million homes in up to 12 of Cityfibre’s existing cities by the end of 2021.

After a period of uncertainty it’s today been revealed that Sky Broadband has done a new wholesale deal with Openreach (BT) to sell the operator’s range of “ultrafast broadband” (G.fast and FTTP) services on to UK customers, which will come at a hefty price discount of up to 40%. Sky now hope to double their customer base.

Israel-based chipset maker Sckipio has teamed up with Siklu to deploy a unique twist on hybrid fibre G.fast broadband technology, which is now able to get capacity from a millimeter Wave (mmWave) wireless link instead of a fibre optic cable. This is being used to deliver speeds of up to 800Mbps (aggregate) to flats.

Industry sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that Openreach (BT) are to revise down their UK rollout plan for 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband ISP technology from 10 million to nearly 6 million premises. The aim is to refocus on their new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) deployment.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today launched the Coppersaurus campaign, which aims to draw attention to the UK’s “prehistoric broadband” and support their court case to end “misleading” uses of “fibre” terminology in ISP adverts (i.e. when it’s used to describe slower hybrid copper and fibre connections).

BT has published their latest results to the end of June (Q1 2018/19 financial), which report that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+ via FTTP and G.fast) network has reached 1.7 million UK premises. But sadly they’ve begun hiding their retail ISP customer figures.
