Telecoms giant Openreach (BT) has just published their first ever Annual Review 2017/18, which charts both their national network deployment progress and the many internal changes they’ve had to make over the past 12 months (mostly as a result of regulatory changes from Ofcom and the Government).

UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today announced that customers of their TeraByte home broadband packages (Home::1), which includes 1000GB (GigaBytes) of monthly usage, will see their usage allowance double to 2000GB (2 TeraBytes) from August 2018, at no extra cost.

Openreach (BT) is to cut the prices of their wholesale “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) products to ISPs by up to 40%, which they say is designed to encourage providers to switch more of their old copper line (ADSL) users on to faster internet connections and this in turn will help to improve coverage.

A Censuswide survey of 3,422 home broadband ISP users has found support for Cityfibre’s legal challenge of the current UK advertising rules, which they say “misleadingly” allows so-called hybrid fibre ISPs to promote their services as being “fibre optic” despite using slower metallic cables (e.g. copper).

Internet provider Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) have today become the latest to launch a 160Mbps download and 50Mbps upload capable (maximum potential speed of the tier) G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” package as part of a new trial, which may be followed later by a 330Mbps capable plan.

Mobile operator and ISP EE has today followed parent BT by launching their own range of G.fast based 145Mbps (28Mbps upload) and 300Mbps (47Mbps upload) download speed capable “Fibre Max” ultrafast broadband and phone packages for residential consumers, which start from £42 inc. VAT per month.

Openreach (BT) has announced that a further 59 locations across the United Kingdom will be the next to benefit from their on-going deployment of 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) broadband technology, which aim to cover 10 million homes and businesses by the end of 2020.

Internet and hosting provider Freeola has today quietly become the latest UK ISP to launch a new “ultrafast broadband” service based off Openreach’s new hybrid fibre G.fast technology, which offers maximum download speeds of up to 330Mbps and uploads of up to 50Mbps.

The UK High Court has today granted Cityfibre permission to proceed with its Judicial Review of the Advertising Standards Authority’s decision regarding the use of “fibre” terminology in broadband ISP advertising, which the operator has often accused of being “misleading” for consumers.

A new “independent” DotEcon study, which was commissioned by BT, has predicted that last year’s agreement to invest an additional £150m of state aid into improving the availability of “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) across Northern Ireland could result in economic, social and environmental benefits worth £1.2bn.

A recent meeting between ISPs has revealed that Openreach expect their new 330Mbps capable G.fast ultrafast hybrid fibre broadband technology to cover 2.2 million UK premises by 31st March 2019 (currently c.1 million) and they’re aiming to trial a new self-install solution later in 2018 (i.e. no engineer required).

As expected BT’s consumer UK ISP division has today launched their new range of “Plus” FTTC, FTTP and G.fast based “fibre broadband“, phone and 4G bundles, which among other things means that if your fixed line goes down then the mobile data takes over and adopts “unlimited” usage.

New customers of budget ISP TalkTalk look set to start receiving a faster and much more capable broadband router with their orders, which comes after ISPreview.co.uk discovered the existence of a new Wi-Fi Hub. At this stage we don’t have a lot of detail to share but we do know the core specifications.

Openreach has published a short notice to give a very rough indication of how much their new ‘Single Order Generic Ethernet Access’ product might cost ISPs at wholesale. At launch in 2019 the service will enable consumers to buy a standalone FTTC “fibre broadband” (VDSL2 or G.fast) line without the voice (phone) service.

Last week BT talked about their aim to have a “single integrated all-IP fibre network” that enabled seamless converged access across fixed, WiFi and mobile services. Today BT’s consumer division, which includes ISP Plusnet and mobile giant EE, has explained more about how this will all work.
