The leader of the UK Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn MP, has claimed that broadband connectivity in the United Kingdom is being held back by “government foot-dragging and ideological dithering,” which he suggests can only be improved by pushing more public money towards fibre optic services.

Not an iceberg’s chance in hell. The Institute of Directors, which represents around 35,000 business leaders and directors, has called on the Government to go beyond their current ambition to deliver a Universal Service Obligation of 10Mbps broadband for all by 2020 and take us to 10,000Mbps by 2030.

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has made a final plea ahead of tomorrow’s Strategic Review outcome and informed the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona (Spain) that he would “significantly” increase investment (£1bn+) in order to further improve national broadband connectivity.

BT’s forthcoming 300-500Mbps G.fast broadband technology won’t just be used to upgrade homes. The operator has also claimed a “world first” by using the G.fast to supply a cellular Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) over copper lines, which could be used to support 4G and future 5G mobile services.

BT has revealed some interesting new information on their UK plans for deploying ultrafast 300-500Mbps G.fast broadband technology, as well as SoGEA’s trial status, a possible extension of VDSL (FTTC) Vectoring, a new 18Mbps “Slow Speed” product for upgrading sub-2Mbps rural lines and more.

BT has today released its latest Q4 2015 results (calendar) and confirmed that their retail division has a total of 7,996,000 broadband subscribers (up by +130K vs +82K in Q3), with 3,689,000 of those on their superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service (up by +250K in Q4 vs +212K in Q3). The operator has also revealed some more details about their post EE merger plans.

Israel-based Sckipio, which is making some of the hardware for BT’s forthcoming hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9700/1) broadband tech, claims to have successfully tested a connection that delivers speeds of 300Mbps over 500 metres of copper cable and this could rise to 500Mbps. But there’s a catch.

A lot has already been said about BT’s forthcoming 300-500Mbps capable “ultra fast fibre” G.fast (NGA2) broadband technology, which is currently being trialled in parts of Swansea (Wales), Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and Gosforth (Newcastle), but not a lot has been seen of the consumer router hardware being tested by Openreach.. until now.

BT has published the first concrete trial locations and technical details for their forthcoming Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) product, which is a naked VDSL style service that allows you to order a standalone superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) line without needing a phone (voice) service.

BT has posted their latest Q3-2015 results (calendar), which reveals that their retail business now has a total of 7,879,000 broadband subscribers (up by +82K vs +83K in Q2) and 3,438,000 of those are taking their FTTC dominated BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +212K in Q3 vs +217K in Q2).

Forget BT’s plan to deploy “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps capable G.fast broadband technology to 10 million UK premises by 2020 (here). Today the operator has joined with Alcatel-Lucent to test future XG.FAST (G.fast2) technology, which under lab conditions has just pushed aggregate speeds of 5.6Gbps over 35 metres of copper cable.
