Openreach Expand FTTP Builds for Three Project Gigabit UK Broadband Contracts UPDATE2

The UK government has posted contract modifications for three of Openreach’s Project Gigabit contracts – Call Off 1 (Lancashire, West Berkshire, Staffordshire, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire), Call Off 5 (Essex and North East England) and Call Off 3 (North Herefordshire, North Wales, Shropshire and South West Wales). The move expands their planned deployments of full fibre broadband ISP networks into rural areas.

Digi Comms Acquires 51 Percent Stake in UK Broadband Altnet Whyfibre UPDATE

Romanian multinational telecommunications and mobile operator company Digi Communications N.V. has entered the United Kingdom’s fibre optic broadband market by acquiring 51% of the share capital of alternative network provider WhyFibre, which was conducted via Digi’s subsidiary Fiber One Limited. A pilot of their new FTTP network is now in the works.

Openreach Tweaks Call Off 1 Project Gigabit Broadband Rollout Contract UPDATE

The Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency and Openreach (BT) have revised downward their £149.7m Call Off 1 Project Gigabit contract – covering parts of Lancashire, North Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, West and Mid-Surrey, Staffordshire, West Berkshire and Hertfordshire. This originally aimed to extend full fibre (FTTP) to 54,336 premises in remote areas, but will now reach 51,821.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has issued a progress update on their deployment of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in rural parts of Wales, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Wiltshire, which form part of their Project Gigabit contracts with the UK government.

Virgin Media O2 Expand UK 3G Mobile Switch Off to Scotland

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning revealed that customers in Scotland will be the next to go through their 3G mobile (broadband) switch-off programme on 5th November 2025. The announcement follows completed withdrawals across various other locations in England (Durham, Norwich, Telford, Watford etc).

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that customers in the large Hertfordshire (England) town and borough of Watford will be the next UK location to go through their 3G mobile (broadband) switch-off programme on 17th September 2025. This follows completed withdrawals in Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford and Torquay.

CityFibre Put First Full Fibre Homes Live in Buckinghamshire for Project Gigabit

CityFibre, which has so far deployed their 5.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises, has just connected its first customers in Buckinghamshire (inc. Hertfordshire and East Berkshire) as part of their £58m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract (LOT 26) to reach 34,000 hard-to-reach rural premises in the county.

Four years have passed since we first reported on the emergence of a new alternative network (altnet) called WhyFibre (here).
