Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning revealed that customers in Scotland will be the next to go through their 3G mobile (broadband) switch-off programme on 5th November 2025. The announcement follows completed withdrawals across various other locations in England (Durham, Norwich, Telford, Watford etc).

This follows completed withdrawals in Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford and Torquay.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve kicked off the construction phase for several of their recently awarded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts with the government (BDUK), including in remote rural parts of Lancashire, Wales, Devon, Hertfordshire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire.

CityFibre, which has so far deployed their 5.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises, has just connected its first customers in Buckinghamshire (inc. Hertfordshire and East Berkshire) as part of their £58m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract (LOT 26) to reach 34,000 hard-to-reach rural premises in the county.

Four years have passed since we first reported on the emergence of a new alternative network (altnet) called WhyFibre (here). The operator had expressed a plan to build a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across “underserved” parts of South England, but until recently they had appeared to be dormant.

CityFibre has begun the build phase of their £58m state-aid supported Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire & East Berkshire (LOT 26) in England (here), which will see them expand their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 34,000 of the hardest-to-reach premises (150,000 if you include their complementary commercial build).

CityFibre has today secured another five of the UK government’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout contracts, totalling over £394m. The deals will spread their full fibre (FTTP) ISP network to over 202,000 hard to reach premises across parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Sussex, Kent, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire & Milton Keynes.

Some 880 homes, businesses and schools in the Hertfordshire (England) town of Rickmansworth, which is home to a total population of over 25,000, have been left without a working fixed broadband ISP and phone service. The situation occurred after criminals damaged Openreach’s local network while attempting to steal their copper telecoms cable.

Network operator Netomnia, which is supported by UK ISP YouFibre, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve quietly added another 4 towns – this time in Hertfordshire (England) – to the 2023 rollout plan for their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network (currently covers 410,000 premises, up from 300k in Nov 2022).

Openreach UK has confirmed that around 970 premises (homes and businesses) in the village of Shenley (Hertfordshire), near Watford, were impacted late last month after copper thieves ripped 1,400 metres worth of the operator’s cable out of the ground, which has so far taken several weeks to fully resolve.
