Sky (Sky Broadband) has confirmed that they will, from today, be temporarily “phasing out” their old satellite-based Sky Q Triple Play packages, which means they’re “no longer available for purchase on Sky.com“. Existing customers will continue to be supported. Sky’s focus is on their newest internet-based streaming products.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE are preparing to trial delivery of their TV content via a new Content Delivery Network (CDN) technology in the “coming months“, which reflects BT’s effort to integrate their “world’s first” MAUD (Multicast-Assisted Unicast Delivery) solution into Edgio’s CDN.

Customers of Sky’s (Sky Broadband) older Standard Definition (SD) TV service and devices (i.e. Digibox and Sky+ set-top-boxes) have been given a final warning to upgrade their service before October 2024 or face automatic cancellation. The warning appears to represent a slight delay on the original August 2024 deadline.

Customers of UK broadband ISP BT and EE, specifically those who also take their internet-connected pay TV service and use the Pro Box in ‘Internet Mode‘ (i.e. streaming live channels rather than using an aerial), will find that they face new limitations on their ability to record and re-watch BBC content from 21st 27th August 2024.

Sky UK (Sky Glass, Sky Stream etc.) has today announced the expected launch of their new Sky Sports+ service, which will become available nationwide from Thursday 8th August 2024. Sky Sports+ is to be included with Sky Sports “at no extra cost” and brings a bunch of new features and content.

In an unsurprising development, both Sky TV (Sky Broadband) and EE (BT) have now confirmed their separate plans for withdrawing the old Netflix Basic (£7.99) plan from their various bundles. The move follows on from last year’s decision (here) by the video streaming giant to replace Basics with their “Standard with adverts” plan.

Customers of UK broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2), specifically those who take their Pay TV services (i.e. TV 360, STREAM or v6 box platforms), may like to know that the provider is offering TV customers who don’t currently subscribe to Premier Sports “free access to the channels for the whole of August”.

The Sky-owned broadband ISP and UK video streaming provider, NOW TV, has finally put right one of its biggest weaknesses by introducing support for 4K (UltraHD – 3840 x 2160 pixels) and HDR (High Dynamic Range) video quality via the launch of their new Ultra Boost. But this is a Sky company, so it’s not cheap, and device support may be an issue for some.

Customers of Sky’s broadband-based Sky Glass and Sky Stream pay TV platforms may like to know that the provider has just added the new Xumo Play app to their platform, which offers an additional 70+ “free” streaming channels including Dateline, Reuters and American Classics.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website advert for internet streaming and broadband provider NOW TV (aka – NOW Broadband), which is a sibling of Sky UK, after it was found to have failed to clearly set out that their basic TV plans (subscriptions) included ads (unless you paid extra for the ‘Boost’ upgrade).

Comcast-owned internet, TV and mobile provider Sky UK has published an interesting new report, which reveals a lot of new details about their network and TV usage, which we haven’t previously seen. For example, ISP Sky Broadband now has 1.5 million FTTP customers and internet traffic peaked at 24.35Tbps on 9th April 2024.

The latest Q2 2024 results from Virgin Media (O2) have today been published, which reveals that they’re now home to 5,710,700 fixed broadband customers (down by -12.2k in Q2 2024 vs +5.3k in Q1) and built another 295,300 full fibre (FTTP) premises – mostly via nexfibre (up from 194k last quarter). Both VM and nexfibre now cover 5m premises via full fibre.

Telecoms giant BT has released some new internet traffic statistics from the final UEFA Euro 2024 football match between England and Spain (8pm) on Sunday 14th July 2024, which saw a 142% increase in customers streaming the game compared to England’s semi-final against the Netherlands.

The chances are reasonably good that most internet users in the UK didn’t wake up this morning and, while craned offer a hot cup of coffee, think “gosh, I know what this already fragmented video content market really needs, ANOTHER streaming platform!“. But that is what Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Corporation has just launched in Tubi. At least it’s “free“.

Some customers of broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media (O2), such as those who have previously taken one of their ‘Maxit‘ bundles that included access to TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) TV content, have reacted with anger and confusion after the UK provider suddenly removed access to it and with only minimal prior notice.
