Controversy has erupted after the London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which has a deal with Virgin Media to supply broadband to educational establishments in the city, began blocking schools from viewing emails sent by rival ISP Exa Networks that has been trying to sell its own Internet solutions.

Thousands of broadband ISP subscribers could soon be hit by a new wave of bullying Internet piracy threat letters (“Speculative Invoicing“) after Maverick Eye, which scours public P2P (BitTorrent) networks for unlawful sharing of copyright content, began “the UK’s largest anti-piracy campaign ever“.

The new Consumer Rights Act 2015 has today been officially introduced and, while most of its measures are focused on “goods“, there are a few changes that will affect consumer “services” like broadband, mobile and phone connectivity in the United Kingdom.

Last year the Court of Appeal ruled that BT’s Next Generation Access (NGA) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / BTInfinity) superfast broadband technology had infringed upon parts of two patents owned by California-based ISP ASSIA, which related to the field of Dynamic Spectrum Management.

The Government has today published its fifth wave study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile data consumers, which estimates that 18% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (7.8 million people) had consumed at least one item of “illegal” online content and 6% “exclusively consumed illegal content“.

The Government’s plan to introduce tougher Internet snooping laws has suffered a setback after the High Court ruled that key parts of the temporary Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act (DRIP), which is due to be replaced by the end of 2016 with a more controversial and extensive law, are unlawful.

The Government is nearly ready to join with Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to kick off a major “multi-media education campaign“, which will encourage Internet users to “do the right thing” and use legal services instead of piracy. Warning letters (email alerts) will also be sent to some broadband subscribers.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer Division, John Petter, has today hit back at Sky (Sky Broadband) for calling on Ofcom to launch a competition review of the operators BTOpenreach division. BT has now similarly demanded that the regulator include Pay TV into its Digital Communications Review and tackle Sky’s “dominance“.

A new research paper from a three man team, which was based out of Carnegie Mellon University and Wellesley College in the USA, has found that forcing broadband ISPs to block individual piracy websites (e.g. The Pirate Bay) had little impact. But blocking a mass of 19 websites in one go did appear to drive UK Internet users towards legal alternatives.
