It took longer than most but O2 (BE Broadband) has now finally implemented a network-wide block (censorship) that prevents its customers from accessing the NewzBin2 (NewzBin) website, which London’s High Court last year deemed to be responsible for facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).

The incumbent phone and broadband provider for Hull and East Yorkshire in England (UK), KC (Karoo), has joined in a local partnership with Humberside Police, Hull City Council, BT and local scrap metal merchants. The group has specifically called on members of the public to help them stop metal thieves.

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has today introduced a new small claims track to the Patents County Court (PCC) that should make it easier for UK internet users to defend themselves against dubious claims of file sharing piracy. Rights Holders will also find the process a lot cheaper.

New research from Birmingham University UK has confirmed that most public BitTorrent (P2P) file sharers have their file transfers monitored by a third party organisation, such as Rights Holders for the purpose of taking copyright enforcement action against broadband ISPs and their customers. But the data collected is far from reliable.

The Competition Commission (CC) is to investigate Ofcom’s March 2012 decision to cut the annual price of BT’s Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and Unbundled (LLU) broadband and telephone lines for rival ISPs, such as TalkTalk and Sky Broadband.

The UK government’s communications minister, Ed Vaizey MP, has told the Open Rights Group (ORG) that “public intermediaries” (e.g. libraries and education networks) will “not be bound” by Ofcom’s Initial Obligations Code, which requires broadband ISPs to clamp down upon P2P internet copyright infringement (piracy).

The Court of Appeal has largely rejected BT’s latest attempt to appeal two judgments of the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) from June 2010 and March 2011, which challenged an Ofcom ruling that found the operator had charged rival ISPs too much for access to its network (i.e. Partial Private Circuits – trunk segments market).

Several of the UK’s largest six ISPs, including Sky Broadband, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, have added more IP addresses to their controversial court ordered block of The Pirate Bay website. But the site, which was blocked for helping to facilitate internet piracy, has already responded by adding yet more addresses.

Consumer Focus has today confirmed that Golden Eye International, which holds copyrights for adult films and is linked to the UK’s Ben Dover brand, will shortly begin sending the first of 2,845 internet piracy claim letters to O2’s UK broadband customers. But this figure is much smaller than their original target.
