Some 4,500 additional homes and businesses in the Lincolnshire market town of Louth will soon gain access to Virgin Media’s new 300Mbps capable cable broadband and TV service, which forms part of the operator’s on-going £3bn Project Lightning network expansion.

The Northern Lincs Broadband project in England today announced that the rural village of Appleby has become one of the first to benefit from their new Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT, which will expand “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to an additional 3,400 premises.

In an interesting development the Government appears to have extended its £60m 2Mbps for all rural broadband (USC) subsidy scheme to include fixed wireless ISP Quickline in Lincolnshire (England), which is big change from the initial focus on Satellite based solutions.

The Lincolnshire County Council has rejected an alternative superfast broadband network proposal from a little known ISP called ionNET, which would have used its point-to-point and ‘up to’ 30Mbps capable wireless broadband network to reach rural parts that the local BT and Broadband Delivery UK programme might overlook.
