Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has published new analysis of the “competitive headwinds” facing Three UK in the mobile market, which finds that the operator’s struggles are “driven by a low subscriber base and high churn resulting from many factors“. But it also warns that the situation could get worse if the proposed merger with Vodafone is rejected.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today launched a new 4G and 5G mobile plan to support UK people on low incomes, which is a low-cost data (mobile broadband), calls and texts (SMS) plan that is only available to those on eligible state benefits and costs just £10 per month.

The new Labour-led UK Government has somewhat echoed the previous administration today by calling on broadband operators to “end the deployment of unnecessary telegraph poles” when rolling out new gigabit-capable networks. But they have “at this stage” rejected the idea of removing Permitted Development (PD) rights for poles.

Mobile operator Three UK has today published their latest results to 30th June 2024, which among other things reveals that 4,900 sites (up from 4,700 six months ago) across 656 towns and cities are now live with 5G (62% population coverage) and the average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer increased to 30.5GB (up from 30GB).

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve now deployed over 1,000 small cells (mini radio masts) across the UK, marking 400 new deployments over the last 12 months. But this now includes the provider’s first “trial” 5G (mobile broadband) enabled sites, which have been installed in Croydon (London).

Telecoms analyst firm Juniper Research has used an April 2024 survey of 3,300 UK mobile subscribers to identify that iD Mobile ranks top as the “leading network operator in the UK for subscriber roaming satisfaction in 2024“, which saw them achieve a net promoter score of 77%.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular Speedtest.net platform, has published their latest Q1-Q2 2024 (H1) study into the speed of 5G based mobile broadband networks in the United Kingdom. The results find that Three UK still delivers the fastest average download (255.23Mbps) and uploads (14.47Mbps).

New analysis published by High Speed 2 Ltd, which is a non-departmental public body that is wholly funded by the UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT), has claimed that the HS2 rail project could help “thousands of properties” across 538 postcodes to gain access to “ultrafast broadband speeds” and better mobile connectivity.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that their 5G Ultra service, which uses 5G Standalone (SA) technology to deliver faster mobile broadband speeds and better performance in other areas, has now been made available to Enterprise and SMB (business) customers in the UK. The service originally launched for consumers over a year ago.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has published some of the responses they’ve received from fixed broadband ISPs and mobile operators to their consultation on enhancing network resilience in order to “reduce the risk of network outages“ (here). Suffice to say that many operators are balking at the costs of deploying national battery backup.

Mobile operator Three UK has expanded their Connected Communities programme, which offers “free high-speed broadband, smart tablets and digital training sessions“, to include the Carrbridge Youth Centre in Birkenhead. The scheme has already launched across four youth groups in Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published their H1 2024 study of UK mobile networks (calls, texts etc.) and mobile broadband performance, which once again sees EE (BT) come top against rivals at Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media). EE also “edged past” Three UK to deliver the “best 5G experience“.

New customers looking to take one of Three UK’s unlimited 5G or 4G based Home Broadband packages may like to know that the operator has just discounted them from £24 to £22 per month on a 24-month term. In addition, you can also get the first six months of service at half price for just £11 (oddly, this only shows up when going to the checkout).

Edinburgh-based UK business ISP Commsworld has this morning announced that they’ve secured a new contract worth £35m+ over 5-years to provide network services to Glasgow City Council (GCC) in Scotland, which forms part of an effort to upgrade from the council’s “ageing legacy networks” to fibre optic and 5G services.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their national 4G (mobile broadband) network can now support the Long Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M or CAT-M) standard, which is a type of Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) service that can connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

A new Strand Partners survey of 4,000 members of the UK public, which was commissioned by broadband and mobile providers Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), has claimed that over a third of rural residents (or 66% of “young people“) are likely to be considering a move away to a town or city in the next 12 months. Poor internet connectivity is one of the key drivers for this.

Wireless infrastructure firm Cellnex has today extended their existing partnership with UK mobile providers Vodafone and O2 (Virgin Media), which will ensure that both operators continue to have access to share Cellnex’s national tower infrastructure to help deploy 5G (mobile broadband) and future services.
