Vodafone UK has today launched their first 5G based MiFi device, which is essentially a small battery powered (lasting up to 8.5 hours) mobile broadband router that can connect up to 32 devices via the WiFi 6 standard. Customers can select either a fixed term or rolling contract, with unlimited data prices starting from £15 per month.

EE and Three UK Deal to Put 4G and 5G on London Underground UPDATE

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have today become the first two network providers to reach a special deal, which will enable them to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the entire London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels). Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new set of H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities of Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester. Overall, EE tended to deliver the strongest availability and performance, but not for all cities.

EE to Upgrade 2,000 UK Rural Areas to Extend 4G Cover by 2024

Mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced plans to upgrade over 2,000 network sites by June 2024 to help extend 4G coverage (voice and mobile broadband) into rural parts of the UK and to significantly reduce partial not-spots, which forms part of their commitment under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

The UK telecoms regulator has today set new annual licence fees (ALF) for spectrum licences in the 2100MHz band, which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks for the eye watering sum of £22.5bn. For example, iD’s £16 per month unlimited data (mobile broadband), calls and texts plan gets a £50 card to spend.

The Government has unveiled a new agreement with the four primary mobile network operators, including Vodafone, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Three UK, which among other things will see existing 2G and 3G signals being “phased out” by 2033 (benefitting 4G / 5G services and mobile broadband) and a new target for OpenRAN adoption.

New UK Law Set to Boost Broadband Rollouts and Device Security
