The national telecoms regulator has released their 2016 Communications Market Report (CMR), which reveals the latest information about the take-up and usage of Broadband, Mobile, Phone, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (split by England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that consumers in Northern Ireland will be the first to trial their new “Home Mobile Broadband” service, which really just sounds like a normal 3G / 4G data tariff with a bigger usage allowance (up to 40 GigaBytes).

After the recent hacking and theft of personal data from several ISPs, including TalkTalk (here) and Vodafone (here), we can today report that the Northern Ireland focused wireless ISP Bluebox Broadband (North West Electronics) is the latest to fall victim with 3,000 people affected.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published its Connected Nations 2015 report and confirmed that 83% of premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service (up from 75% in 2014), with take-up reaching 27% (up from 22%). But they also changed the definition of “ultrafast” speeds from 100Mbps+ to 300Mbps+.

A new report from Northern Ireland’s Public Accounts Committee has blasted the EU funded Bytel project after it “grossly mishandled” public funding and spent £920k on unused equipment that should have cost just £21.3k+. The 2004 scheme aimed to provide “high-speed broadband” between Belfast, Craigavon, Armagh, Dundalk and Dublin

The latest Broadband Delivery UK Market Testing Pilot (MTP) to go live is Avanti’s scheme, which is using their Ka-band HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2 Satellite spacecraft to deliver broadband speeds of up to 30Mbps to potentially 13,000 premises across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland (e.g. Antrim, Aberdeenshire, Dumfries, Galloway, The Borders).

Remote rural areas in Northern Ireland have been given yet another boost after a further investment of £1 million was extracted from the Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation (TRPSI) budget in order to help expand the reach of faster broadband and fuel uptake.

Businesses in the city of Belfast (Northern Ireland) could soon benefit after Tibus (The Internet Business Ltd) revealed that it was planning to make use of the UK Government’s “Super-Connected Cities” Connection Voucher Scheme in order to roll-out a new fibre optic network in the area.

A new group called Lightstream Community Fibre (LCF), which appears to have cloned B4RN’s network approach in Lancashire (England, UK), has been setup to help bring a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband network to rural parts of the Ards Peninsula (County Down) in Northern Ireland.
